Men's Shot Put Updates - 2012 London Olympic Games
US Has the 4th Worst Showing Ever in Shot
Although the US came in with Cantwell ranked #1 in the world, Hoffa ranked # in the world and Ryan Whiting ranked #5, the squad only left with a bronze medal. The 2012 London Games marks the first time since 1976 that the US has not won at least one silver medal (with the exception of 1980 when the US boycotted the Moscow Games). That year Al Feuerbach was the top thrower finishing 4th in Montreal. The only other year the US hasn't medaled was in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The only other year the US has not earned at least silver in the shot put was at 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1920 the American's went 3-4-7-8 in the finals.
Most recently in 2000 and 2004 Adam Nelson won the silver (Godina Bronze in 2004), while Cantwell won the silver in 2008. The US swept Gold-Silver-Bronze at multiple Olympics Games during 1960 (Rome), 1948 (London), 1924 (Paris), 1921 (Stockholm), 1904 (St. Louis) and 1900 (Paris).
