FloTrack Flashback: Nick Willis Achieves Lifelong Goal in Monaco
When Nick Willis heard he ran under 3:30 in the 1500m at the 2014 Monaco Diamond League meeting, he didn't believe it at first. But when his time of 3:29.91 was confirmed, the 30-year-old Kiwi let out a scream of jubulation, and the seventh place finisher took a much deserved victory lap. In his post race interview, Willis expressed how much this time meant to him, and described the difference between championship racing versus running for a time.
Nick Willis: "...You can't control what other people do. Medals and championships are about how you compete against others...but the last few races and especailly in this one it's been about what can I do irrelevant to others."
However, a story like this is not a rarity in Monaco. In this race alone, seven out of the top nine finishers came away with PB's, and three national records were set. The year prior, the top seven finishers also came away with personal bests.
below is the 2013 edtion of the 1500m race in Monaco.
Among many other notable names, Nick Willis is entered to run in what should be another very fast 1500m this Friday in Monaco. His fastest 1500m time this year came just last week, where he ran to a 3:39.31 in a mellow race in Lignano. He also recorded 13:29.78 second place finish earlier this season in the 5K at the adidas Grand Prix, finishing behind only Ben True.
