Andre De Grasse Turns Pro, Signs With Puma

After a year that included two World Championship bronze medals and two NCAA titles, Andre De Grasse announced that he signed a professional contract with PUMA Running.

The sprinter’s decision means that he will forgo his senior season of eligibility at the University of Southern California in favor of running professionally for the brand that also represents the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt.

According to Lori Ewing of The Canadian Press, De Grasse's contract is a multi-year deal worth $11.25 million with bonuses that could be as high as $30 million.

“Signing this partnership with PUMA is a major thing for me, in such an important phase in my career,” De Grasse said in a release. “I have massive dreams for what I want to accomplish and PUMA clearly shares my belief, they will give me great support along my journey.”

De Grasse will continue to work with USC Head Coach Caryl Smith-Gilbert while he completes his degree in Los Angeles, according to CBC Sports.

He will be represented by Doyle Management under agent Paul Doyle. Doyle also represents athletes such as Olympic Champion and world record-holder Ashton Eaton, World Champion Christian Taylor, and World Champion Asafa Powell.

It was reported by The Canadian Press in October that the athlete was in contract negotiations with a sponsor, and that the shoe contract was reportedly a seven-figure deal. The reports were immediately denied by De Grasse’s mother Beverley who said that her son “is not a professional.”

At the time, she also said that he did not have an agent. The news came just two days after World bronze medalist Trayvon Bromell decided to sign with New Balance and forgo his remaining eligibility at Baylor.

De Grasse and Bromell tied for third place in the 100m at the World Championships in Beijing this past August. Bolt claimed the victory and Justin Gatlin finished second, while Bromell and De Grasse both ran 9.92 to each tie for third and claim bronze medals.

Prior to the World Championships, De Grasse won both the 100m and 200m at the Pan American Games in his hometown of Toronto. He also claimed titles in the 100m and 200m at the NCAA Championships in Eugene last June.

His 200m winning time of 19.58w stands as the fastest 200m ever run by a collegian under all conditions. At the time, it was also the fastest mark run in the world under all conditions in 2015.

PUMA also recently signed NCAA Champion Jenna Prandini following her title-winning performance in the 100m at the NCAA Championships. The former Oregon Duck made her debut in PUMA spikes while competing in the 200m for the United States at the World Championships in August.
