During Sunday's New York City Marathon, four-time Olympian Meb Keflezighi announced that the 2017 New York City Marathon will be his final race as a professional. The performance will also mark a career total of 26 marathons for the 26.2-mile event. Keflezighi has run 24 marathons to date and will compete in an undisclosed 25th marathon prior to New York next year.  

While acting as race marshal along with five of the six 2016 Team USA Olympians for Sunday's race, Keflezighi shared the news on the television broadcast as well as his personal Twitter account.

At 41-years-old, Keflezighi has competed in four Olympic Games, highlighted by a silver medal in the marathon at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He has competed in New York nine times and earned seven top 10 finishes over the five boroughs. Keflezighi earned his first World Marathon Majors victory at the 2009 New York City Marathon where he became the first American man to win the race since Alberto Salazar in 1982.

In September, Keflezighi shared his plan to conclude his career at 26 marathons with FloTrack in an interview discussing his final Olympic Games in Rio. 

"I want to do two more marathons to finish it out with 26.2 in honor of the marathon distance. That's about it, and after that, just have fun and not have to race competitively, just enjoy the sport," Keflezighi said.
