Kaela Edwards Sets 1K Collegiate Best In 2:40.79
Kaela Edwards of Oklahoma State broke the 1000 meter collegiate record on Friday night.
Kaela Edwards of Oklahoma State ran the fastest 1000 meters in indoor collegiate history tonight, running 2:40.79 for the win at the University of Nebraska. Complete results are here. She reportedly led the race wire to wire. Edwards, a senior, was the 2016 NCAA indoor champion in the mile before struggling with injuries during the outdoor season. She went on to finish sixth in the 1500m at the NCAA outdoor meet last June.
Edwards has excelled indoors for all four years of college now. In addition to her 2016 national title, she was third at indoor nationals in the 800m in 2014 and the runner-up in 2015. She looks poised to contend for another high finish this March.
According to ​Track & Field News, ​the old collegiate record was held by current Villanova senior Angel Piccirillo at 2:40.82.​
