With Arms Raised, Molly Huddle Costs Herself A Medal

I really, really hate to bring this up again, but there is no avoiding it.

Our #1 Heartbreak of 2015 (like there was ever a doubt) is Molly HuddleÂ’s premature celebration in the World Championship 10,000m final that cost her a medal and allowed the previously unheralded Emily Infeld to sneak past for bronze. I was there to see it in person. It was numbing. 



The stakes were just so huge, and HuddleÂ’s split-second decision to throw her hands in the air made the difference between a dream coming true and an absolute nightmare unfolding. It will go down as one of the most unforgettable moments in World Championship history, and for Huddle, IÂ’m sure the scene has played out in her mind literally hundreds of times since that August night in Beijing.

Imagine one small mistake having such tremendous ramifications. That's Molly Huddle's reality.

Even as she continues to be AmericaÂ’s finest female distance runner, this race will likely stand out forever when we think of Huddle. It will never define her career as she is already one of the greatest in American history, but this will unfortunately stick with her like a scar forever. The look on her face was heartbreaking and unforgettable.

The replay is brutal for even me to watch, I can't fathom what itÂ’s like for Huddle. Maybe she never watched it again.
