100m Champ Tori Bowie Withdraws From 200m, But Other Americans Advance
Tori Bowie did not start in the women's 200m heats, but several other Americans advanced.
The women's 200m heats took place earlier today, and while one doubler from the 100m in Dafne Schippers excelled with the fastest time of the day, the 100m world champion Tori Bowie withdrew from the longer event -- possibly due to injury after diving at the line in her 100m race two days ago at the IAAF World Championships in London.
Her spot in the 200m heats was uncertain even before she won the 100m, as she had gone on the record after USAs saying she "absolutely did not want" to double.
Two other non-starters were medal hope Michelle-Lee Ahye and German athlete Laura Muller. Muller's DNS was speculated to be due to the same type of food poisoning that 400m men's medal favorite Isaac Makwala contracted that forced him to DNS in the 200m.
The other two Americans and most of the big names (aside from the non-starters) all qualified for the semis safely.
Here are the semifinal qualifiers:
