AUSTIN --- Courtney Lindsey of Texas Tech won a hotly-contested the men's 100m title in 9.89 seconds at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Coming into the race, Lindsey was largely overlooked after the fast times turned in by his competitors in the semis on Wednesday and because he had never broken 10 seconds prior. His personal best was 10.02.
But the senior chased Oregon's Micah Williams, who had the best start in the field by far, and overtook him midway before holding off the rest of the speedy men with a dip at the line for the win.
"It was a fast race," Lindsey said. "I wanted to get off to a good start, but I didn't. Once I got out, I just stayed tall and let my speed carry me."

The victory gave Lindsey a modicum of redemption after Texas Tech was disqualified from winning the 4x100m due to an exchange infraction.
"My mindset was we needed to get points," Lindsey said. "We were very disappointed (about the DQ), but I had to keep my head focused and go out there and try to score for my team. I tried to win the thing, and that's what I did."
Godson Oghenebrume of LSU was second in 9.90, and Shaun Maswanganyi of Houston was third in 9.91.
Da'Marcus Fleming of LSU was fourth in 9.97, PJ Austin of Florida was fifth in 9.97, Udodi Onwuzurike of Stanford was sixth in 9.98, Williams was seventh in 9.99, Favour Ashe of Auburn was eighth in 10.02, and Cole Beck of Virginia Tech was ninth in 10.05.
The top four finishers all ran personal bests with Williams turning in a season best.
