NCAA champion Will Sumner easily qualified in the first heat, running 1:46.49.

The main surprise was Brandon Miller, who last year made the U.S. team on a dive at the finish line, finishing fifth in heat three. Miller will move on to the semifinal though, as his time was fast enough to advance.

Men's 1500m

In heat one, Yared Nuguse took care of business, going to the front and putting the race away early. Joe Waskom of Washington went with Nuguse and was rewarded with a drama-free final 100m. John Gregorek, Josh Thompson, Nathan Green and Matthew Centrowitz took the remained of the top six spots.

The slow early pace in heat two ensured that only three men would advance to the final. Hobbs Kessler was boxed in the inside with 150 meters remaining but broke loose on the homestretch to finish behind Sam Prakel. Eric Holt held off Craig Engels for the third spot.

The third heat was even more compelling with Drew Hunter and Cole Hicker making a late rush to join Henry Wynne as automatic qualifiers. Cooper Teare was the odd man out as he slipped to fourth and will not advance to the finals. Teare is still entered in the 5000m.

Heather MacLean has raced sparingly this outdoor season, but looked good finishing behind Johnson in heat two. All three-time qualifiers came from heat two.

Women's 10,000m

The race started very conservatively with an opening 800m of 2:55 for the leaders. The pace didn’t pick up much from there, as a large group of women stayed together passed 5000 meters.

With four laps remaining, Alicia Monson went to the front and put pressure on the field. It quickly became a race between her, Karissa Schweizer, Elise Cranny, Weini Kelati, Natasha Rogers and Ednah Kurgat. Monson’s acceleration cut the field down to just three with Cranny and Rogers following Monson. But in the final lap it was Cranny who had the most left, leaving Monson and Rogers behind. Her last lap was timed at 62 seconds as she finished in 32:12.70. Monson placed second in 32:17.51. Rogers took third in 32:22.77.

Men's 10,000m

A conservative pace from the gun turned into a mad dash over the final 1,600m meters as a last kick determined the winner to close out Thursday's competition.

Grant Fisher surged to the lead with 800m to go and split 59.91 seconds for 400m going into the bell lap, but that couldn't hold off Woody Kincaid's signature kick as he sprinted to the 10k win in 28:23.01. Kincaid split 54.76 over the last 400m to work his way up to the U.S. title.

Joe Klecker would also find another gear in the final meters to finish second in 28:24.50, followed by Sean McGorty, who went from fourth to third on the home stretch and clocked 28:24.96.
