Sean Brosnan Is Reportedly Out As UCLA Assistant Coach

UCLA assistant coach Sean Brosnan is reportedly out of a job, and Brosnan himself has confirmed it on social media.

The Bruins head cross country and distance coach, who was hired in August of 2022 to revamp the team's distance corps, held an Instagram live on Sunday to announce his departure from the program, nearly a year into his tenure.

According to The Stride Report, Brosnan said during his live announcement that his contract with UCLA was not renewed.

Brosnan was a two-time national champion coach for Newbury Park High School before making the leap into the collegiate ranks at UCLA. In one year with the Bruins, Brosnan oversaw a distance contingent which included Peter Herold, who reached the NCAA final in the 3,000m steeplechase in June and finished 10th.

During Brosnan's tenure with Newbury Park, he won national cross country titles in 2019 and 2021 and developed national champions Nico Young and Colin Sahlman.

Young won Nike Cross Nationals in 2019 and Sahlman followed two years later at the RunningLane Cross Country Championships in 2021, clocking the fastest cross country 5K in high school history in 14:03.29. Brosnan's high school teams at Newbury Park are considered among the best ever. He left Newbury Park in 2022 before their final national championship win at Nike Cross Nationals. His wife, Tanya Brosnan, took over the program, along with coach Steve Hawkins.

In March of 2022, the Panthers capped off their short indoor track season with a national record in the 4xmile at New Balance Nationals Indoor, authoring a time of 16:29.31. Brosnan was hired at UCLA five months later.

Brosnan told LetsRun on Sunday that he was certain he would not go back to the high school ranks to coach.

Brosnan told the site he is currently figuring out his next plans and is considering his options. They may include a post-collegiate group, he said, or possibly another job in the NCAA.
