EUGENE -- Femke Bol of the Netherlands pulled away over the final 100 meters to win the women's 400m hurdles in a meet record at the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field.

Bol's winning time of 51.98 smashes the meet record of 52.77 set by American Dalilah Muhammad in 2021.

It's a meet record and a Diamond League title for Femke Bol!

Bol, the world champion in the event, and American Shamier Little, the Worlds silver medalist, came off the final turn practically shoulder to shoulder. But Bol was able to separate quickly over the final barriers to cross the line clear by nearly a full second.

Little finished second in 53.45. Jamaicans Russell Clayton (53.56) and Janice Russell (53.60) finished third and fourth with American Anna Cockrell taking fifth in 54.48.

“I tried to go out a bit fast but when I get tired this is hard for me," Bol said. "But I had a really strong finish again and my strides worked like I wanted, and finishing in 51 and the Diamond League trophy win is all I can ask for.”

For Bol, the season can be considered nothing short of a rousing success. She came into the spring having made a huge adjustment, reducing her stride count between hurdles from 15 to 14 in attempt to generate more speed. The early returns have clearly paid dividends and should continue to do so as she gets more comfortable.

“My season was great," she said. "I made a lot of progress, I changed some things like my strides. You never know if it’s gonna pay off immediately. We’re looking mostly at Paris next year, but it really paid off quite a lot this year. I’ve had an amazing season, amazing races on the Diamond League circuit and then when I come here it’s the Diamond League final and it’s where the Worlds were last year. It’s an amazing crowd so I really want to do well and I’m just really happy I could finish it off so strong and in front of this crowd it’s really amazing.”
