Andy Hernandez Diaz of Italy used a strong opening attempt to win the men's triple jump competition at the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic.
EUGENE -- Andy Hernandez Diaz of Italy used a strong opening attempt to win the men's triple jump competition at the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field.
Diaz Hernandez hit his opening attempt, leaping out to 17.43m/57-2.25 to take the lead and never look back. He finished the day with the best jumping series of the field, extending beyond the 17-meter mark on all four of his attempts. He passed in Rounds 3 and 4.

Hughes Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso, who finished runner-up with a fifth-round jump of 17.25m/56-7.25. Zango, the world champion in this event, came in leading the Diamond League standings.
Donald Scott was the class of the U.S. jumpers on this day. His opening jump of 16.84m/55-3 held up for third.
Fellow Americans Chris Bernard and Will Claye each struggled on the day. Bernard fouled his first four jumps before registering his only legal mark of the competition, 16.07m/52-8.75, in the fifth round. Claye fouled in Rounds 1 and 2, passed his third and fourth jumps, and fouled his final two, failing to register a mark.
