Molly Seidel, Tokyo Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist, Withdraws From Trials
Early Thursday morning, Molly Seidel, the Tokyo Olympic marathon bronze medalist, withdrew from the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials
Early Thursday morning, Molly Seidel, the Tokyo Olympic marathon bronze medalist, announced her withdrawal from the U.S. Olympic Trials on Saturday in Orlando, citing a broken patella and a partially torn patella tendon.
Seidel posted a video on her Instagram page.
"I'm dreading having to make this video but I decided yesterday, along with my coach, that I will not be lining up for the Olympic Trials this coming Saturday," Seidel said on social media .
Seidel shared that her knee took a turn last month for the worst and she's done everything in her power to get to the starting line.
"I've dreamed about making this team and defending my bronze medal at the Paris Olympics since the last Olympics," Seidel said. "But I know that the team that we will be sending is going to be the most incredible, most competitive team we can be. I'm going to be watching and cheering for all the men and women racing this weekend."
The 29-year-old from Flagstaff, Arizona, made the U.S. Olympic team on her first try in February of 2020, debuting at the distance -- she qualified with her half marathon time from Houston in January of 2020 -- with a performance of 2:27.13, which was good for second overall. She went on to finish sixth in the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics.
Before winning the Olympic bronze, she lowered her personal best to 2:25.13 in the 2020 London Marathon.
This news comes a day after Jared Ward announced he will pull out of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials due to high hamstring pain.
