You couldn't have predicted it if you tried.
University of Georgia sophomore Christopher Morales-Williams netted a new World short track record on Saturday at the SEC Indoor Championships, clocking a can-you-believe-it 44.49 to win his first conference title.
The performance, which came midway through the SEC Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, set a new meet record, a facility record and a new collegiate record and was one of three efforts under 46 seconds.
Morales-Williams, who entered with a career best 45.39 from Feb. 10 at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational earlier in the month, ran 45.58 in the preliminaries on Friday.
The 19-year-old from Ontario, Canada moved past Michael Norman's former collegiate record of 44.52, which was accomplished back in 2018. Morales-Williams became the 11th collegian to drop a time under 45 seconds over NCAA history.
Florida's JeVaughn Powell was second in 45.61, while Alabama's Chris Robinson was third in 45.62.
Year-over-year, Morales-Williams took off more than a second from his SEC performance from 2023, improving upon his 45.87.
