The Payton Jordan Invitational has been a fixture on the collegiate track and field schedule since 1996, bringing many of the nation’s top up-and-coming athletes to Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, California.

The meet, hosted by Stanford University, returned for its 25th edition in 2022 after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

The Payton Jordan Invitational has a reputation for being a showcase for distance running, so achieving qualifying standards for upcoming events or even seeing records fall in those events would not be unusual.  

The event is named in honor of legendary track and field coach Payton Jordan, who was the head coach at Stanford for more than two decades (1957-1979) but also gained global notoriety as the coach of the 1968 United States track and field team. That team won a record 24 medals (12 gold) at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

With the 2023-2024 collegiate track and field season winding down, the Payton Jordan Invitational offers a nice tune-up for the Pac-12 Championships, which will take place in Boulder, Colorado, on May 11-12.

The season will end for Stanford and the nearby teams with the NCAA West Prelims (May 22-25), followed by the NCAA Championships (June 5-8).
