Cal-Berkeley's Mykolas Alekna Breaks Oldest Men's World Record In Discus
California-Berkeley's Mykolas Alekna surpassed a 38-year-old world record in the discus, throwing 74.35m at the Oklahoma Throw Series in Romona on Sunday.
On Sunday, California-Berkeley's Mykolas Alekna set a world record of 74.35m in the discus at the Oklahoma Throw Series in Romona.
In doing so, the college junior from Lithuania broke the oldest men's track and field world record, which was previously set by Jurgen Schult in 1986 with a mark of 74.08m.
Alekna was the bronze medalist at the World Championships in Budapest over the summer and started the competition with a 72.21m throw. The rest of his series included throws of 70.32m, 72.89m, 70.51m and then he threw the best mark in world history on his fifth attempt.

Initially, the 21-year-old's throw measured at 74.41m, but it was later revised with a steel tape measurement.
Alekna previously set the collegiate discus record of 71.00m nearly a year ago. Three of his throws on Sunday bettered that mark. t

Alekna's father, two-time Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna, was previously second on the all-time list. Now he moves down to third, courtesy of his 73.88m toss from 2000.
This performance comes a day after Cuba's Yaime Perez produced the longest discus throw in the world since 1989 at the same meet. On Saturday, the 2019 World champion threw 73.09m.
