Alexander Doom, Mykolas Alekna Shine At Diamond League Marrakech
Alexander Doom, Mykolas Alekna Shine At Diamond League Marrakech
A host of elite performances and records were struck on Saturday in Morocco at the Diamond League Marrakech.
With many high-level track meets taking place this weekend, the Wanda Diamond League took on its latest meeting in Marrakech, Morocco, and it did not disappoint, as we saw multiple records go down, most notably in the women’s 800 meters, women’s shot put and men’s triple jump.
A precursor to the upcoming Diamond League Meeting in Eugene -- otherwise known as the Prefontaine Classic -- Marrakech was home to some excellent competition and rounded the evening of competition with the man from the host country, Soufiane El Bakkali, taking home the win in the men’s steeplechase.

Prudence Sekgodiso Hits World Lead in Women’s 800m
Continuing her undefeated season at 800 meters, Prudence Sekgodiso clutched up for an impressive victory in Marrakech, running 1:57.26 to bring home her first Diamond League victory of the season.
This was not only a world lead in the event, but it was also a lifetime best by nearly a second.
Sekgodiso certainly rose to the occasion against Habitam Alemu, whose 1:57.70 was also a world-class time. As a key representative from South Africa on the international stage, this could be the start of a breakthrough campaign for Sekgodiso leading up to the Olympic Games.
Alemu led the race through 400 meters, but ended up finishing second. This was still a good performance from her, as she’s shown good talent over 800m and 1,500m on the Diamond League circuit thus far.
Doom’s Breakout 2024 Continues with 44.52 Victory in 400m
Making his first appearance in the open 400m this outdoor season, Alexander Doom put on a show by clocking a time of 44.52 seconds -- a nearly a half-second lifetime best -- to win in Marrakech.
His exploits at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, when he won the 400m final in a shocking upset, are clearly no fluke. Doom is the real deal.
Consider this: Doom’s opened the 2023 season in 46.50.
Doom opened up his season two seconds faster year-over-year. If he’s this far along, he will be a name to watch out for as the Olympics approach.
Angelica Topic’s Serbian National Record wins High Jump
After winning the previous Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Angelica Topic rose to the occasion in Marrakech, bringing home another Diamond League victory but in grand fashion, setting a Serbian National Record in the process.
After clearing 1.94m in Doha, which was a personal best, Topic decided to give 1.95m a try in Marrakech – and she cleared it on the first attempt.
Two misses at 1.98m set up for her third attempt, which she would ultimately clear and earn a lifetime best by one centimeter.
She took a crack at 2.00m, but she did not clear any of her three attempts. Topic has been on a roll her last few competitions, which would set up very well to crack 2.00m in 2024.
Mykolas Alekna Nearly Sets Discus Meeting Record
Newly-minted world record-holder Mykolas Alekna had a solid series in the ring, throwing 70.70m to secure his first Diamond League victory of 2024.
The current Marrakech (Rabat) Meeting Record sits at 70.78 meters, so Mykolas was just a hair away, but this was a good performance to get his international competition opener under his belt.
He won by nearly three meters, with no other competitors clearing 68 meters, and he continues to establish himself as the premiere discus thrower in the early stages of the 2024 season.
Kenyan Duo Shines in Tight Battle in Men’s 800 Meters
The pre-race favorite, Emmanuel Wanyonyi -- who already ran under 1:44 in his season debut in the 800m -- did so once again by running 1:43.84 to bring home the Marrakech meeting victory.
Wanyonyi has been undefeated thus far on the track in 2024, as well as his lone appearance on the roads, showing some great tactical prowess while also throwing down some excellent times, too.
His fellow countryman, Wycliffe Kinyamal, was right behind him, as he ran 1:43.98 to also run his second sub-1:44 performance of the year.
Kinyamal has run three Diamond League Meetings this year in the 800 meters and finished in second in all three of them.
