The Prefontaine Classic aka Pre Classic aka Diamond League Eugene is the fifth event of the 2024 Diamond League season and will bring many of the top track and field athletes from all over the world to the United States for the first, and only time this year. 

The meet will take place May 25 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, which has some history with the Diamond League. 

In September 2023, the venue became the first facility outside Zurich or Brussels to host the two-day season-ending Wanda Diamond League Final where the year’s 32 overall champions were crowned.

Though the circuit’s 2024 stop isn’t the end-all event it was last year, it should be exciting in its own way as a preview of what’s ahead this summer.

First, Hayward Field will welcome America’s best track and field athletes back to Eugene, Oregon, from June 21-30 for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The top performers there will get another crack at the world’s best during the 2024 Olympics in Paris (July 26-Aug. 11).

The first two stops of the 2024 Diamond League season were held in China – Xiamen (April 20) and Shanghai/Suzhou (April 27). The circuit made stops in Qatar on May 10 and Morocco on May 19.

The events at the Prefontaine Classic that will earn athletes points for the Diamond League include six men’s disciplines and eight women’s disciplines. All season, the athletes will continue collecting points toward the year’s final event in Belgium. 

When Is The Pre Classic 2024?

The one-day Diamond League Eugene (Prefontaine Classic) 2024 will take place May 25 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

How To Watch Pre Classic 2024

For audiences in the United States, Peacock and NBC will provide live coverage of the one-day event, and the action will get underway at 4 p.m. Eastern. It is one of six Diamond League events this year being broadcast on Peacock and/or NBC.

Starting in 2025, which was announced April 10, FloTrack will be the streaming home of the Diamond League for audiences in the United States and its territories (with the exception of any events being held in the United States).

What Events Will Be Contested At The Prefontaine Classic 2024?

Though there will be a variety of events at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic, only some will count for Diamond League points.

Men (6): 100 meters, 200 meters, 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, shot put, Bowerman Mile

Women (8): discus, pole vault, triple jump, 100 meters, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 5,000 meters, 3,000-meter steeplechase
