Who Was Irena Szewinska?
The event’s namesake, Irena Szewinska, grew up in the Polish track & field spotlight, excelling in short-distance running events and the long jump. She went on to claim a handful of world records and seven Olympic medals (in five trips), including three gold (1964, 1968, 1976).
Perhaps that description doesn’t do her success justice. She is actually the only athlete in history to have set world records in 100, 200 and 400 meters.
After her days of competing concluded, Szewinska stayed active behind the scenes in Polish and European athletics, including a stint on the International Olympic Committee.
Szewinska died in 2018 after a battle with cancer. She was 72.
About Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium
Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium is a multi-purpose venue in Bydgoszcz, Poland, that has room for more than 20,000 spectators. It’s used primarily for soccer and track & field events.
The facility, named after another standout Polish track and field star, officially opened in 1960 with a capacity of nearly double the current number, but it simply wasn’t as comfortable. It was completely rebuilt between 2007 and 2008.
About World Athletics
World Athletics is a global governing authority to more than 200 national member federations that provides standardization, competition and record keeping for “athletics,” which is the original name for what most refer to as track & field – or disciplines that feature running, jumping and throwing.
As part of the World Athletics landscape, athletes and fans can enjoy these run, jump and throw events in indoor and outdoor settings – plus relays, cross country, race walking and road running – all open to athletes of all ages and skill levels in cities and venues across the world.
Events can be smaller one-day competitions, up to the crown jewel of World Athletics, the World Athletics Championships.
The World Athletics Championships first was held in 1976, and since 1991, it has been held every two years.
The World Athletics Series calendar for 2024 includes multi-day events for indoor action, U20, cross country, race walking, relays and road running.
The one-day meet circuits include a variety of tours – Diamond League, Continental, Indoor, Cross Country, Race Walking and Combined Events.
The World Athletics Continental Tour will feature more than 200 events in 2024.
