Bullis School's Quincy Wilson Breaks World U18 Record At U.S. Trials
Quincy Wilson, Bullis School sophomore, ran a 44.66 in the first round of the USATF U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials, setting a new U18 World record.
Quincy Wilson made history on the first day of action at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene.
The 16-year-old Bullis School sophomore ran a time of 44.66 seconds and won his heat in the first round of the men's 400m, setting a new world U18 record and breaking an over 40-year-old high school boys record.
Wilson secured two barrier-crosses with that result, the first being that world U18 mark of 44.84, which was last accomplished by Justin Robinson in 2019 -- which was fitting, because Robinson, 22, was lined up on his outside, in lane eight.
But the other was just as momentous, as Wilson eclipsed Darrell Robinson's former national high school record of 44.69, which was set in 1982 while he ran for Wilson High School. Robinson's time had stood for over four decades.
Previous to Friday's run, Wilson sat at U.S. No. 7 on the all-time high school boys list with his last time of 45.13, which he achieved at New Balance Nationals Outdoor.
"I've always dreamed for this moment so I told myself I was going to come out here for a big moment and get ready," Wilson said after the race.
Wilson will return to the track on Sunday for the men's 400m semifinal.
"Honestly, they said I wouldn't be able to run around but I'm coming out here and I just want to prove myself right," Wilson said. "I know that my training, my coaching, everybody has me in the right position so I'm just coming out here and executing every race I can."
