Athing Mu Falls During 800m Women's Final At The US Olympic Trials

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Athing Mu's hopes were dashed on Friday when the 22-year-old shockingly fell in the women's 800 meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field.

As a result, three new women stepped up and it was defending U.S. champion Nia Akins who walked away with the win in 1:57.36 -- Mu had a bye through to worlds in the 800m, so she did not compete at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in 2023.

Allie Wilson was second in 1:58.32 and Stanford athlete Juliette Whittaker secured her spot on Team USA in third in 1:58.45.

While Mu won gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and was the 2022 World champion in the 800m, she fell to third at worlds a year ago and was positioning herself for redemption on the international stage.

On Friday, she got caught up in a web of women and hit the track. The fall destroyed her race, but she managed to get up and finish in 2:19.

The former Texas A&M star's fall sent shockwaves through the track and field world. She was returning to the track from a hamstring injury that she said prevented her from seeing the track earlier.
