Noah Lyles Returns To Action In Men’s 100m
After a successful 100m and 200m double at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Noah Lyles was set to compete in Monaco to start his Europe campaign, but ultimately pulled out, citing that he needed an extra week of training.
Lyles will instead be the headliner for this week’s 100m competition in London, competing against a solid field in his secondary event as he prepares to aim for individual gold at the Paris Olympics.
His wind-legal personal best of 9.83 -- set at the U.S. Olympic Trials -- was a great step in the right direction in his quest for dominance and he will be in London looking to connect on a sub-9.80 race.
Five additional men have broken 10 seconds in the 100 meters so far this year, including the likes of Akani Simbine, Ackeem Blake, Letsile Tebogo, Jeremiah Azu, and Louie Hinchcliffe.
The most notable and intriguing name in this field has to be Zharnel Hughes, the hometown star for this London meeting. He hasn’t had the greatest 2024 campaign, with a relatively light racing schedule. Hinchliffe, meanwhile, has exploded on the scene, winning an NCAA title for Houston in under 10 seconds and then booking his ticket to Paris for Great Britain.
Hughes finished well behind Oblique Seville and Noah Lyles during his last time on the track, running 10.09, which was his only appearance in the 100m this year.
It’s been over six weeks since that race, which has given Hughes lots of time to train and get back to work in preparation for the summer season.
Gabby Thomas Highlights Strong Women’s 200m Field
A deep, talented group of women will take the track over 200m in London, highlighted by recent U.S. Olympic Trials champion Gabby Thomas, whose season best of 21.78 is the lone sub-22 of the field in 2024.
Not far behind her, Julien Alfred and Dina Asher-Smith, both of whom have sub-22 personal bests in this event, will serve as primary challengers to Thomas.
Alfred’s coming off of back-to-back wins in July in both Hungary (100m) and Monaco (200m), giving her some good momentum heading into London. She hasn’t lost a race since the Prefontaine Classic in May and certainly will be a threat to Thomas.
Asher-Smith brought it at the UK Championships, running her best 200m of the season in 22.16 to bring home yet another national championship. Her 10.99 performance last week in the 100m in Monaco was only good enough for third, but he was right on par with where she’s been this year, as she’s run four races between 10.96 and 10.99 in 2024.
Tamara Clark, Daryll Neita, and Jenna Prandini will also be some other names to watch out for as they add to the talent and depth of this group of women.
America’s Olympic-Bound Trio takes on Leonardo Fabbri in Men’s Shot Put
After an exciting U.S. Olympic Trials in the men’s shot put, four of the top six finishers will be competing in London this weekend, including the top three that will represent the United States in Paris.
Ryan Crouser made his outdoor debut at the U.S. Olympic Trials last month, but he continued his winning ways, throwing 22.84m to bring home a national championship and secure his Olympic qualification.
The man who always gives Crouser a run for his money, Joe Kovacs, will also make an appearance here in London. While he finished runner-up at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Kovacs has the strongest seasonal best in the field, throwing 23.13m at the Prefontaine Classic back in May.
Rounding out the Olympic trio for the United States, Payton Otterdahl had a great performance in Eugene with a throw of 22.26m, placing third to secure his place on the Olympic team.
Leonardo Fabbri has been throwing a lot in 2024, with some great results, to boot. He’s thrown over 22.90m at three separate meets this year, and has been undefeated through his entire outdoor campaign.
Now that he’ll have another opportunity to face Crouser, Kovacs, Otterdahl, and Tom Walsh, a congregation of the best throwers in the world, we’ll truly be able to see him shine on a big stage.
While Tom Walsh’s season hasn’t been as good as we’ve seen, he’s still a storied name in this event, and being around this incredible field could certainly bring out the best in him.
Rounding out the field includes Roger Steen, who took sixth at the U.S. Olympic Trials, as well as fellow New Zealander Jacko Gill, as well as Scott Lincoln. All three of these men have season’s bests above 21.30m.
Hometown Favorite Keely Hodgkinson Takes On Women’s 800m
Continuing her excellent season in her marquee event, Keely Hodgkinson will have a great opportunity to run for her hometown crowd in London.
She’s been undefeated in 2024 in the 800m and stepped down to the open 400m for the UK Championships, running 52.22 in the finals to place seventh. Not too shabby for someone who is a renowned 800m/1,500m runner.
While Hodgkinson certainly gets top billing (and deservedly so), Great Britain will be well represented beyond just her, as Laura Muir, Jemma Reekie, Erin Wallace, and Georgia Bell will also toe the line in London. Keep in mind, Reekie is the reigning champion in this race, having run 1:57.30 last year.
Muir, although known primarily for her exploits in the 1,500m, is also excellent at 800m, too. She’s coming off of an incredible 3:53 performance in Monaco and is clearly in great shape to do something great here in London.
Reekie finished runner-up at the UK Championships in the 800 meters, and she’s clocked two 1:57 performances in 2024. The battle between her, Hodgkinson, and Muir is going to be electric.
Some other names to watch out for include Halimah Nakaayi, Alle Wilson, and Catriona Bisset.
