2022 World Champion Jake Wightman Withdraws From Olympics Due To Injury

On Thursday, Team Great Britain announced on social media that Jake Wightman, the 2022 World champion in the 1,500m, will withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a hamstring injury.

Since he claimed gold at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Wightman has been battling through a string of injuries.

Wightman was given a discretionary selection by his delegation in the 800m despite not competing at the British Athletics Trials in June. He had run a time of 1:44:10 at the Los Angeles Grand Prix in May and 1:45.35 in June at the Diamond League in Stockholm and had owned a lifetime best of 1:43.65 from 2022.

His appearance in the 800m would have been his second Olympics, following his 10th-place finish in the 1,500m final in Tokyo.

So that left a bit of fortune for the 30-year-old Elliot Giles, who will replace Wightman in the field. Giles had fallen during the 800m final at the British Trials. But with Wightman ruled out, the delegation resurrected his hopes. Giles had run a top time of 1:44.46 on the season and featured for Great Britain at the 2021 Olympic Games.
