For the first time since 2012, an American stood on the 10,000m Olympic podium.

On Friday, Grant Fisher won Olympic bronze by putting together one of the gutsiest races of his career, only finishing behind winner Joshua Cheptegei and Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi.

Fisher became the first American to win a medal in the 10K since 2012, mirroring Galen Rupp's performance in London when he won silver in 27:30.90.

Uganda's Cheptegei, who is the world record holder in the event, stopped the clock and won gold in an Olympic record of 26:43.14, while the Ethiopian Aregawi won silver in 26:43.44.

Fisher was in line for a runner-up placement before he was passed in the final meter.

But the former NCAA champion from Stanford kept himself in contention throughout the entirety of the chaotic 25 laps, never letting himself fall out of the top-five, despite getting tripped up somewhere in the middle.

He also turned his ankle late in the race, stepping on the race.

With just under 150m to go, Fisher took advantage of his prime position and made his move, surging all the way into second, before getting out-leaned at the line, crossing in 26:43.46.

In the fastest 10,000m in Olympic history, Fisher closed in just around 55 seconds, avenging his fifth-place finish in Tokyo, where the race also came down to a blistering final lap. His final 1,000 meters was recorded in about 2:27.

The American record holder will be back on the track in just a few days time, as the first round of the 5,000m is slated for Wednesday, August 7.
