Grant Fisher made history at the 2024 Olympics when he became the first American to medal in the 10,000m since Galen Rupp in 2012 on Aug. 2 at Stade de France in Paris. 

Fisher’s dramatic win, which overwhelmed the U.S.-based commentary team and FloTrack coverage team with emotion, was one of the biggest moments of Day 2 of the Olympic Track and Field meet. He surged ahead in the final seconds of the race to finish with a bronze medal.

Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda and Berihu Aregawi of Ethiopia finished just ahead of Fisher. 

The last time an American medaled in the 10K was Rupp at the 2012 London Olympics, where he won silver. 

Fisher, 27, finished ninth just three years ago at the Tokyo Olympics. 

The United States last won gold in the 10K in 1964 when Billy Mills won in Tokyo. Fisher is just the fourth American to medal in the event.

The women’s 10,000m final is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 9, at Stade de France in Paris. 

Has An American Woman Ever Won Gold In 10K At The Olympics?

No. An American woman has never won the 10,000m at the Olympics since it was first introduced at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. 

Lynn Jennings won bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, while Shalane Flanagan won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ethiopia has won five gold medals and a total of 11 in the women's 10K. Ethiopia has medaled in the women's Olympics is every games since 1992.
