2024 Olympics Track And Field Recap, Results: Noah Lyles' First Race

Day 2 of Olympic track and field action got underway at the Stade de France on Saturday morning.

The second session on Day 1 ended in exciting fashion, as Grant Fisher became the first American since 2012 to win a medal in the 10K.

In the fastest race in Olympic history, American Grant Fisher improved on his fifth-place finish from Tokyo, winning bronze by clocking a time of 26:43.46.

On Saturday, the decathlon resumes, and we'll see Noah Lyles take the track for the first time on his quest to win four Olympic gold medals.

Stay tuned for live updates across the morning session.

6:00am EDT: Men's Decathlon Discus Throw (Group B)

German Leo Neugebauer threw 53.33m on his first attempt not far off the Olympic Decathlon Best 53.79m that Bryan Clay threw in 2008. Neugebauer took over the overall lead again.

Shortly after, Lindon Victor of Grenada one-upped Neugebauer and beat the Olympic Best with a thrown of 53.91m, moving him from 10th to fourth in the overall decathlon standings.

5:45am EDT: Men's 100m Round 1

The men's 100m is underway. With eight heats in total, the first three in each heat and the next three fastest time advance to the Semi-Final.

In Heat 1, Jamaica's Kishane Thompson ran away with an easy 10:00, seemingly shutting it down 50 meters into the race. Thompson is the world leader (9.77) in the event this year. Jeremiah Azu of Great Britain was disqualified for a false start.

In Heat 2, Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya claimed the win in 10.08

In a Heat 3 shocker, NCAA 100m champion Louie Hinchliffe (9.98) of Great Britain took down American Noah Lyles (10.04). Hinchliffe's effort likely forced Lyles to push longer than he anticipated before shutting it down to take second. Lyles admitted in his post-race interview with NBC that he downplayed his competitors but stated that won't happen again.

Jamaica's Oblique Seville ran a solid 9.99 in Heat 4 to cruise into the Semi-Final Round.

Like Lyles, defending Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy was bested by an NCAA star. Nigerian Kayinsola Ajayi won Heat 5 in 10.02 followed by Jacobs in 10.05. Ajayi finished third in the men's 100m at the 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, competing for Auburn University. Jacobs had to battle all the way to the finish line to take second in the heat.

In Heat 6, South Africa's Akani Simbine (10:03) took down Jamaica's Ackeem Blake (10:06), who finished second. Blake had a good start with a powerful first step putting Simbine under early pressure, but Simbine turned up to a higher gear to break the tape in first place.

American Kenny Bednarek dropped a 9.97 for the fastest time in the round to win Heat 7. Defending Olympic 200m champ Andre de Grasse of Canada took third (10.07).

American Fred Kerley matched his teammate's round best performance of 9.97 in Heat 8 for an easy win over Botswana's Letsile Tebogo (10.01) and Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes (10.03).

5:20am EDT: Women's 800m Repechage Round

The inaugural Women's 800m Repechage Round gives athletes a second chance at qualifying for the Semi-Final. In the four-heat round, the first place winner in each heat and next two fastest athletes move on.

Germany's Majtie Kolberg (1.59.08) ran the fastest time. Additional qualifiers were Kenya's Vivian Chebet Kiprotich, France's Anais Bourgoin, Switzerland's Valentina Rosamilia, Austrailia's Abbey Caldwell, and Cuba's Rose Mary Almanza

American Allie Wilson ran the fifth fastest time in the round but finished third in her heat and didn't earn a q. Wilson missed advancing by .08 seconds.

4:55am EDT: Men's Decathlon Discus Throw (Group A)

American Harrison Williams threw a Season Best 46.91 to finish second in the Group. However, Williams finished just seventh in the event and dropped in eighth place in the overall decathlon standings.

4:35am EDT: Men's 100m Preliminary Round

The highly-anticipated men's 100m event officially got underway with a six-heat Preliminary Round. The first two in each heat and the next 4 fastest advance to Round 1 later today. Top athletes in this round faced the challenge of trying get through to the seeded Round 1, while conserving energy to compete again in less than one hour.

4:10am EDT: Men's Pole Vault Qualification

In the men's pole vault, all athletes meeting the Qualification Standard (5.80m) or at least 12 best performers advance to the Final.

World record-holder and defending Olympic gold medalist Mondo Duplantis of Sweden entered the competition at the second height. Duplantis improved his world record in April at the Xiamen Diamond League meet in Xiamen, China.

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Chris Nilsen no-heighted and didn't advance. Nilsen had medaled at every major championship in which he had competed previously.

American Jacob Wooten missed at 5.70.

Duplantis finished in the top spot in the Round at 5.75m. American Sam Kendricks also cleared 5.75m to get through to the Final.

4:05am EDT: Decathlon 110m Hurdles

Day 2 kicked off with the men's decathlon 100m hurdles. Canadian Damian Warner ran the fastest time in 13.62. The performance moved Warner from fourth place to first place in the overall decathlon points standings.

German Leo Neugebauer finished 15th, dropping him from first to third in the overall standings.

Harrison Williams finished sixth in the 100m hurdles and moved from eighth to seventh in the overall standings. Williams is the top American in the standings.
