Julien Alfred Wins Olympic Gold in 100m, Sha'Carri Richardson Takes Silver
Julien Alfred won the Olympic women's 100m final on Saturday at the Paris Olympics, while American Sha'Carri Richardson took silver.
Julien Alfred of St. Lucia shocked the global running world on Saturday, winning the women's 100 meter final at the Paris Olympics.
Americans Sha'Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson took silver and bronze, respectively.
"I think I really just focused on my execution, and not everybody else," Alfred said afterward. "Sometimes I tend to panic at the end of my race. But I think my goal coming out here was to trust myself, trust Coach Flo and most importantly, trust God and my race plan."
All three are first-time medal winners. Richardson and Jefferson are both training partners at Star Athletics.

It's St. Lucia's first Olympic medal in any sport, and an emphatic one. Alfred commented afterward on what the gold medal might be able to do for the development of athletics in her country.
"I really hope we're going to get a new stadium," she said. "I really am hoping we can have the youth of the country, have them believe they can get out of the ghetto, have them believe that even though they're from a small place in the Caribbean, they can make it out."
Alfred had a strong start to the gun and burst out of her blocks over her first 30 meters.
Richardson, however, struggled to gain momentum and was the last woman out of the blocks. Needing to make up a significant margin, the Dallas native closed the gap but fell to second.
Alfred crossed the finish line in 10.72, while Richardson was next in 10.87. Jefferson followed in 10.92.
"It means a lot to me, and to the Caribbean as well," Alfred said. "In my village, I heard, 'We trust in you. Let's got out and win for the Caribbean and BVI, Jamaica, Antigua. Like people from the Caribbean were just coming up to me and wishing for the best."
Richardson's start was a factor in the semifinals as well, where Alfred also ended up on top in a head-to-head heat matchup.
This is the first time since 1996 that the American women have won two medals in the 100m.
