Another busy and exciting day at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will see medals awarded in the men’s pole vault, women’s discus, women’s 5,000 meters and what should be an explosive women’s 800.

The track and field competition began Aug. 1 and will end Aug. 11, with events in 2024 being held in and around Stade de France in Paris.

The athlete to keep an eye on for the men’s pole vault is Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, the defending champion in the event. He was one of the 12 competitors to advance from Saturday’s qualifying round to Monday’s final round.

The 24-year-old is the No. 1-ranked pole vaulter in the world. He took ownership of the sport’s world record in 2020 and has beaten his own mark another seven times. The most recent was a 6.24-meter performance in April 2024 at the season-opening Diamond League event in Xiamen, China.

To win the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Duplantis made a leap of 6.02 meters. To reach the finals this year, he was one of 10 competitors to clear 5.75 meters. They’ll all be back in action in Paris on Monday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Chris Nilsen of the United States, the silver medalist in Tokyo after a lifetime-best leap of 5.97 meters, missed the cut this week in Paris. He jumped 5.40 meters, but it took 5.70 to advance.

New Champion Guaranteed In Women’s 800 At 2024 Olympics

In the women’s 800, track and field fans are guaranteed to see a new winner, as defending champion Athing Mu of the United States failed to qualify for this year’s Olympics.

Instead, there is expected to be a battle between 2020 runner-up Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain and 2023 world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya. Oh, and just to keep it interesting, throw in Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma, who was the top qualifier this week at Stade de France.

All three were successful in the semifinals, which were held Sunday at 2:40 p.m. EDT. The eight-runner final is scheduled for Monday at 3:45 p.m. EDT.

Another twist for the 2024 edition of the 800 was the introduction of the repechage round, an extra layer of qualifying that gave every athlete a second chance to reach the semifinals.
