The 1,500-meter events at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are stacked with talent, history, rivalries and potential, and the excitement is scheduled to unfold over seven days at Stade de France.

The starting fields this week in Paris include both champions from the 2020 games in Tokyo – Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway and Faith Kipyegon of Kenya. They’re also the Olympic record holders in the event with 3:28.32 and 3:53.11, respectively, both accomplished in Tokyo.

The preliminary round of the men’s 1,500m was completed Friday, the 24-athlete field for the semifinals was set following the repechage round Saturday and the list was narrowed again with two semifinal heats Sunday.

The final of the men’s 1,500 at Stade de France is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:50 p.m. Eastern.

The women also will hit the track Tuesday for their 1,500-meter race, with the first round helping kick off the day’s track and field action in Paris.

For those who don’t advance automatically, the women’s repechage round Wednesday at 6:45 a.m. EDT will give them a second chance. The semifinals will be held Thursday at 1:35 p.m. EDT, and the medals finally will be on the line Saturday at 2:25 p.m. EDT.

Men’s 1,500 Meters At The 2024 Summer Olympics

In the men’s 1,500 these days, two names immediately come to mind – Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr of Great Britain. The former is the defending champion at the Olympics. The latter is the reigning world champion.

Ingebrigtsen has beaten Kerr in eight of the nine times they’ve lined up for the finals of a 1,500-meter race, but Kerr has proven the potential is there. He also made the podium in Tokyo, taking the bronze medal, so his 2024 effort could be fueled by a combination of confidence, experience and possible redemption.

Between them on the podium in the last Olympics was Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya, a past world champion who’s always a threat, too.

In this year’s Olympic semifinals, Ingebrigtsen and Kerr ran in the same semifinal, finishing first and second, and Cheruiyot was in the other.

Only one male athlete in history, Great Britain’s Sebastian Coe, has won the Olympic 1,500 twice – 1980 and 1984.

Beyond Ingebrigtsen’s Olympic record in Japan, the world record belongs to Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco – a 3:26.00 performance in 1998. Ingebrigtsen does now own the No. 6 time in history, a 3:26.73 effort at this year’s Diamond League Monaco meet in July.

Finalists For Men's 1,500 At The 2024 Olympics In Paris

What Is The Repechage Round?

The new-to-the-Olympics repechage round gives all athletes the chance to run two races at the Olympics, compared to possibly just one in the past. It also could serve as a second chance for someone who may have suffered some kind of mishap.

The concept has been introduced for all individual track events from the 200 meters to the 1,500, including the hurdles. The first event to feature the change was the women’s 800 meters on Saturday.

Women’s 1,500 Meters At The 2024 Summer Olympics

Just like the men’s 1,500, there’s plenty of name recognition in the women’s field for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

Leading the way is Kenya’s Kipyegon, the two-time defending Olympic champion, reigning world champ and the owner of both the world (3:49.04) and Olympic (3:53.11) records in the event.

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kipyegon became the third athlete in history to successfully defend the Olympic title, and the three also are the only competitors to win more than one 1,500m gold medal at the Olympics – Tatyana Kazankina (1976, 1980), Sebastian Coe (1980, 1984) and Kipyegon (2016, 2020).

Among those looking to challenge Kipyegon in Paris, three can be found on the list of the 15 fastest 1,500 times in history – Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, Jessica Hull of Australia and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands. Hassan is the defending Olympic champion in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races.
