The Paris Olympics Day 3 Recap: A Photo Finish, Scratches And More

Depending on who you ask, the third day on the track in Paris was arguably the most exciting so far, as the men's 100m wrapped up in style.

There were many storylines throughout all six events that took the stage at Stade de France, some involving empty lanes and others being Olympic firsts.

The fourth day of competition will begin with the men's 400mH heats at 4:05 a.m. EST on Monday morning.

The fourth evening session of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will get rolling at 1:00 p.m. (EST)  with the men's pole vault final leading it off, followed by three more finals in the women's discus, women's 5000m and women's 800m.

Noah Lyles Sneaks Past Kishane Thompson, Both Run 9.79

He can talk the talk and walk the walk and now there's nothing anyone can do about it.

After two consecutive runner-up finishes in the first two rounds, Noah Lyles kept his composure in the final and claimed his second Olympic title, but his first in the 100m.

All eight lanes were filled with the best in the world, including both Frenchman Marcell Jacobs, the gold medalist from Tokyo, and Kishane Thompson of Jamaica, who came to Paris as the fastest man this year.

After a dazzling light show provided a memorable introduction, the gun went off and things immediately got interesting.

Lyles, who is known for his second-half racing, got off relatively slow compared to Thompson and others, but worked all the way to the line to catch Thompson at the line, edging out the first-time Olympian by five-thousandths of a second.

Defending 400m Champion Steven Gardiner Withdraws, Michael Norman Leads Qualifiers

In an unfortunate turn of events, the reigning Olympic champion Steven Gardiner did not get a chance to defend his title from Tokyo, withdrawing due to nagging injuries.

In his absence, 2022 World champion Michael Norman posted the fastest time from the first round, clocking a season best of 44.10, which is tied for the fourth-fastest time in the world this year.

Fellow American Quincy Hall and Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards rounded out the top three times from all six heats, clocking 44.28 and 44.31, respectively.

Other medal favorites, including Canada's NCAA superstar Christopher Morales-Williams and Grenada's Kirani James, both made it through to the semi-finals as well.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh Continues Dream Year, Defends Gold From Tokyo

In true dominant fashion, the recently-minted world record-holder cleared her first four bars with a single attempt, as she flew over 1.86m, 1.91m, 1.95m and 1.98m without any hiccups.

The Ukrainian's biggest threat came in the form of Nicola Olyslagers, who was in the fight until the very end. The Australian cleared 2.0m on her final attempt, but just couldn't keep pace with the defending champion.

The pair of Iryna Gerashchenko (Ukraine) and Eleanor Patterson (Australia) both tied for the bronze medal position, both clearing 1.95 without any prior misses.

The queen of American high jumping, Vashti Cunningham was the first one off of the podium, clearing 1.95m. Ultimately, it was a near-miss from one of her early attempts that stood between her and her first Olympic medal.

One Throw Is All It Takes As Ethan Katzberg Gives Canada First Gold In Men's Hammer

Since 2000, only three men have thrown their way into the all-time top 10 list in the men's hammer throw and Ethan Katzberg is now one of them.

The 22-year-old star doesn't have a ton of experience under his belt, but that's never been a problem before, and it definitely wasn't today.

Katzberg only registered two marks, but his first toss of 84.12m was more than enough to propel him to gold, as he was over four meters ahead of the rest of the Olympic field.

Hungary's Bence Halasz and Ukraine's Mykhaylo Kokhan found themselves on the podium with a silver and bronze medal around their neck, as the pair threw 79.97m and 79.39.

Rudy Winkler was the top American in 6th place over a meter and a half away from the podium.

Keely Hodgkinson Takes Control Of Her Semi-Final, Takes One Step Closer To Gold

The fastest woman in the world this year at 800 meters took notes before her semifinal, taking the lead and refusing to look back.

She ran a smooth 1:56.86, which was the fastest time of the day.

The 2023 World champion Mary Moraa took the win in her semifinal, running 1:57.86 as Ethiopia's Worknesh Mesele was right behind her in 1:58.06.

Mesele's teammate Tsige Duguma won the other semifinal just ahead of St. Vincent's Shafiqua Maloney, who ran a new national record of 1:57.59, which was behind Duguma's 1:57.47.

Juliette Whittaker took one of the two time qualifiers, finishing third in the second semifinal after running 1:57.76, a new NCAA all-dates No. 3

Jakob Ingebrigsten And Josh Kerr Lead Qualifiers To 1500m Final

For a pair of guys that aren't afraid to say things with their chest, it was all business for the defending Olympic champion and the defending world champion.

The Norwegian and Great Britain athlete went 3:32.38 and 3:32.46 to go 1-2 in the first of two semifinals, as Cole Hocker (USA), Brian Komen (KEN), Stefan Nillessen (NED) and Pietro Arese (ITA) rounded out the top six automatic qualifiers.

The second semifinal saw an American 1-2 finish, as Yared Nuguse went wire-to-wire, clocking 3:31.72 while Hobbs Kessler was a quarter of a second back in 3:31.97.

Neil Gourley (GBR), Niels Laros (NED), Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN) and Narve Nordas (NOR) put themselves into position over the last 100m, as 11 men went under 3:33.3.

The final could see a variety of racing tactics from the five countries represented, as the United States, Great Britain, Netherlands, Kenya and Norway all have multiple men in the final.
