Letsile Tebogo Wins Olympic Gold in Men's 200M, Noah Lyles Takes Bronze
Letsile Tebogo steals gold in the men's 200m at 2024 Paris Olympics over Americans Kenny Bednarek, Noah Lyles.
Letsile Tebogo gave Botswana its first gold medal in Olympic history, winning the men's 200m in 19.46. American Kenny Bednarek took his second-consecutive silver medal, running 19.62, which was just ahead of fellow American and 100m gold medalist Noah Lyles, who took bronze in 19.70.
Botswana won its inaugural medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with Nijel Amos winning a silver in the 800m. The men's 4 x 400m relay team won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Tobogo, 21, is the U20 world-record-holder in the 100m. He burst onto the global championship scene at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, winning silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m. His 19.46 winning time was a new personal best, beating his previous personal best of 19.50 set at London Diamond League 2023 last July.
Bednarek won silver in the 200m at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His time was just off his personal best of 19.59 from the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. At the Trials, Bednarek took second to Lyles and stated "I've got to win next time" in the mixed zone after that race.
Lyles was attempting to win his second gold medal of the 2024 Olympics on the road to his publicly-stated goal of winning four gold medals in total during the Game, but he was denied.
Lyles was taken off the track in a wheelchair by a medical team after the race.
Lewis Johnson of NBC reported on the broadcast that Lyles' mother Keisha Caine Bishop confirmed that Lyles was diagnosed with COVID-19 two days prior to the men's 200m Final.
Shortly after, Lyles, wearing a mask, spoke with Johnson on the broadcast.
"I woke up early, about 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning, and I was feeling really horrible and I knew it was more than just being sore from the 100, you know. Woke up, went to the doctors and we tested and unfortunately, it came up that I was positive for COVID," Lyles told Johnson.
Lyles won 100m gold in the men's 100m with a time of 9.784 two days before receiving his diagnosis. He was shown on the broadcast wearing a mask at Stade de France in the days leading up to the men's 200m final.
In the 200m semifinal on August 7, Lyles finished runner-up to Tebogo, then skipped the mixed zone and went to the medical area.
