When Are The 4x400 Relay Finals At The 2024 Olympics: What To Know

Anticipation for the 4x400 relays at the 2024 Olympics grew exponentially when it was announced that 16-year-old Quincy Wilson would be running for the USA.

At just 16 years old, Maryland high schooler Quincy Wilson has been one of the most followed names and storylines in track and field this year.

Wilson now owns the U18 world record in the 400-meter dash, which he set twice at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June, running 44.66 and 44.59, and again at the Holloway Pro Classic in Gainesville, Florida, on July 19 with a jaw-dropping 44.20 performance.

The latter effort at the Team Trials was in the semifinals and gave him an opportunity to make the 2024 Olympic team outright.

Though he finished sixth in the final, won by eventual Olympic gold medalist Quincy Hall, Wilson was added to the Team USA relay pool for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, meaning there at least would be a chance for him to become the youngest American male to have ever participated in a track and field event at the Olympics.

Rumors swirled this week, and the news broke Thursday – Wilson got the call for the preliminary round of the men’s 4x400 and will make Olympic history Friday at 5:05 a.m. Eastern as the leadoff runner for the Team USA men. FloTrack confirmed the news with a source with knowledge of the decision.

It was possibly for Wilson to be selected for the mixed 4x400 that was held Aug. 2-3, but that did not happen. The United States went on to finish second behind the Netherlands after an epic final leg by anchor Femke Bol

Team USA’s quest for relay redemption at Stade de France began Thursday with qualifying for the 4x100 races, and both teams advanced to the finals, which will take place Friday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern (women) and 1:45 p.m. EDT (men).

The official rosters for the 4x400s haven’t yet been released by USATF, as that information typically is available closer to race time. Coaches also have the ability to make substitutions heading into the final.

The first round of the women’s 4x400 will get underway Friday at 4:40 a.m. Eastern, with Wilson and his teammates following a few minutes later.

Qualifying teams will be back on the track to determine the medals Saturday at 3:12 p.m. Eastern (men) and 3:22 p.m. EDT (women).
