2024 Paris Olympics Track And Field Rewind: August 9 Morning Session

The penultimate day at Stade de France kicks of this morning with the women's heptathlon. American Anna Hall will try to maintain her hold on a medal position, as she enters the day in third place. 

6:30a EDT: Women's Heptathlon Javelin Group B

Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium had the best mark in Group B, a season best 54.04.

With six events down and only the 800m to go, Thiam is in the lead with 5924 points. Great Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in second with 5803 points. American Anna Hall is in fifth with 5567 points with her strongest event left to go.

6:05a EDT: Women's 100m Hurdles Semi-Final

Grace Stark! The American and NCAA champion from University of Florida won Heat 1 in 12.39. Stark beat world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, 60m hurdles World Indoor champion Devynne Charlton of Botswana and World Outdoor champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica.

Charlton grabbed the second Q from the heat in 12.50, and Amusan in third in 12.55. Amusan hoped to qualify on time but did not advance.

Williams took sixth and did not advance.

In Heat 2, American Alaysha Johnson ran away from the pack in 12.34. Nadine Visser of Netherland also advanced in 12.43.

In Heat 3, Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn clocked a 12.35 season best to win. Camacho-Quinn is the defending Olympic champion.

2024 U.S. champion Masai Russell took second with a lean at the line in 12.42.

All three Americans advanced to tomorrow's Final.

5:30a EDT: Men's 800m Semi-Final

In Heat 1, world leader Djamel Sedjati of Algeria surged ahead over the final half lap to take the win in 1:45.08.

American Brandon Miller ran strong but took fifth in 1:45.79 and will not advance. The top two in each of the three heats plus next two fastest overall move to the final.

In Heat 2, World champion Marco Arop of Canada finished in first, clocking 1:45.05 in a tight finish at the line.

Hobbs Kessler got boxed on the back stretch of lap 2 and faded down the home stretch and placed sixth in 1:46.20. 

Kessler's Olympics are over. He became the first man to run the 800m and 1500m for Team USA in the same Olympics since 1972.

In Heat 3, American Bryce Hoppel punched his ticket to the men's 800m Final, placing second only to Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi. Hoppel ran 1:43.41, while Wanyonyi ran 1:43.3.

Hoppel will be the lone American in the Final.

5:20a EDT: Women's Heptathlon Javelin Group A

Anna Hall threw a personal best of 45.99, the third best mark in the group. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, the overall standings leader, threw the fourth best mark in the group.

5:05a EDT: Men's 4x400m Relay Round 1

16-year-old Quincy Wilson made history, becoming the youngest male track & field athlete to compete in the Olympics for Team USA. The full Team USA lineup included:

1 - Quincy Wilson
2 - Vernon Norwood
3 - Bryce Deadmon
4 - Christopher Bailey

Wilson struggled on the first leg, splitting 47.30, and came through in seventh. Norwood ran a heroic 43.60 to close the gap and handed off to Deadmon. Deamond closed the first turn in fourth and maintained this position, splitting 44.20. Chris Bailey began the anchor leg in fourth place and when coming around the final turn, he sling-shotted around Japan to get Team USA across the line in third place. 

Botswana won Heat 1 in 2:57.76. Men's 200m gold medalist Letsile Tebogo was a late addition to Botswana's lineup and got the squad out to a big lead, running a strong first leg in 44.40. It was Tebogo's sixth straight day of competition.

Great Britain took third in the heat.

Team USA has dominated this event historically, winning 18 gold medals dating back to 1912.

France, Nigeria, and Belgium took the top three spots in Heat 2. Japan and Belgium made it through to tomorrow's Final on time.

Update: Nigeria has been disqualified due to lane infringement and replaced by Italy.

4:40a EDT: Women's 4x400m Relay Round 1

Team USA has won gold in the Women's 4x400m relay in seven straight Olympics. The Round 1 team consists of:

1 - Quanera Hayes

2 - Shamier Litte

3 - Aaliyah Butler

4 - Kaylyn Brown

The squad took Heat 1 easily running 3:21:44, beating Great Britain (3.24.72)  by over three seconds. France took third in 3:24.73.

Jamaica took Heat 2 in 3:24.92 followed by Netherlands (3:25.02) and Ireland (3:25.05). 

These top three teams from each heat auto-qualified for the Final. Belgium and Ireland also made it through on time.

Several top 400m runners sat out the relay today either resting from yesterday's 400m hurdles final or preparing for tonight's 400m final but are expected to compete in tomorrow's 4x400m relay final.

4:05a EDT: Women's Heptathlon Long Jump

Day 2 of the women's heptathlon began with the long jump. 

American Chari Hawkins scratched on her first attempt, then jumped 5.90 and 5.66, respectively, in her next two attempts.

Following a jump of 5.72 in her first attempt, American Taliyah Brooks scratched her second attempt, and then jumped 6.15 in her third attempt. Brooks dropped from sixth place to eighth place in the overall standings.

American Anna Hall jumped 5.93, 5.80, and 5.72 in her three attempts. She dropped from third to sixth in the overall standings.

Martha Araujo of Columbia achieved the best jump of the event (6.61). 

Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain jumped from second place to first place in the overall standings heading into the javelin throw.

When Are The Paris 2024 Olympic Games?

The Olympics begin on July 26 and end on August 11. The track and field events began on Aug. 1.
