What began on Aug. 1 is nearing its completion, as the track and field segment of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is set for its final full day of action at Stade de France – and the nearby neighborhoods for the marathon. 

The track and field portion of the games officially will end with the women’s marathon Sunday, which will conclude just a few hours before a festive closing ceremony celebrates more than two weeks of camaraderie and competition and serves as a sendoff for the more than 10,000 athletes who made Paris their home this summer.

Before the last race and emotional goodbye, however, is an action-packed Saturday that will feature nine event finals and nine more chances for athletes to reach the podium in Paris.

Saturday’s schedule will kick off at 1 a.m. Eastern with the men’s marathon and Eliud Kipchoge’s quest to become the first athlete to win the event three times. Oh, and at 39, he’s also the two-time defending Olympic champion. 

Beyond that storyline is the fact that the marathon is one of the original events of the modern Olympics, which first were held in 1896.

Medals also will be awarded in the men’s high jump, men’s 800, women’s javelin, women’s 100-meter hurdles, men’s 5,000, women’s 1,500 and the prestigious 4x400 relays.

Track and field fans already saw history made in the preliminary round of the men’s 4x400 on Friday when 16-year-old Quincy Wilson ran the opening leg for the United States, making him the youngest Olympian in Team USA history.

Wilson helped the men qualify for Saturday’s final, and the women made the cut, too. That means a shot at more history, as the men seek their third consecutive gold medal in the event, and the women try to make it eight straight. That’s right, they’ve won every time since Atlanta in 1996!

Will the final of the women’s 1,500 be as dramatic and exciting as Team USA’s Cole Hocker upsetting favorites Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr in the men’s race?
