Sticking together, the athletes finished the first kilometer in 3:12.Eritrean athlete Rahel Daniel led through the 2K mark then jogged off the track in a bizarre move.
With 12 laps to go, a lead pack formed. Kenya's Margaret Chemlimo Kipkemboi and Chebet were 1-2 with 10 laps to go.
The pace continued to hover around 3:01 per-kilometer, while all three Americans are lingered in the back of the lead pack, doing a great job of staying in touch.
Hassan stayed in very back of the lead pack, riding the rail and following her strategy of running the shortest possible distance around the track.
French runner Allesia Zarbo fell to the track with 4 laps to go, requiring medical attention.
Shortly after, American Parker Valby made a move to front of the pack. An NCAA star from University of Florida, Valby was running with the biggest names in the distance running world.
Valby's surge seemed to put a charge into the other athletes. The pace quickened, and Valby was overtaken.
Going into the final lap, the lead pack dropped the U.S. athletes.
Hassan finally broke out wide and made a push down backstretch, but it was too late. The final 200 was an all-out sprint with Hassan and Battoecletti straining mightily in an effort to overtake Chebet. However, Chebet refused to be denied and held on to secure her second gold medal of these Games.
Weini Kelati was the top American, finishing eighth in 30:49.98.
