Jakob Ingebrigtsen Wins Olympic Gold In 5,000m, Grant Fisher Secures Bronze
In an Olympic final that began slow, it turned into a barn burner as Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen finally secured his gold.
While the majority of distance races have been honest in terms of pace at the Paris Olympics, the men's 5,000m final on Saturday got out to a pedestrian start in the early stages before an Ethiopian trio broke the race wide open.
Less than a week removed from an unexpected fourth-place finish in the highly-anticipated 1,500m final, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen answered the call, eventually earning the win with a surge, a breakaway and a final time of 13:13.66, notching his third global win at the distance after taking World Championships in 2022 and 2023 in Eugene and Budapest.
What was surprising was the fact that Grant Fisher, who scored a bronze in the men's 10,000 to begin the track and field events on the first day of the Paris Olympics at Stade de France, was dropped with a lap to go but found a way to finish with his second straight third-place finish.

His final surge provided all he would need to score that hardware, as Fisher came through the line in 13:15.13.
With 600m to go, Ethiopia's Hagos Gebrhiwet surged to the front and began separating himself from both Ingebrigtsen and his Ethiopian teammates.
By the time the bell rang, the Norwegian was right on his heels. With 200m to go, Ingebrigtsen made his move and never looked back, pulling away for the title and a season best.
In the chaos behind him, Fisher re-engaged and put himself in position down the final straight, as he picked off the field to move himself into third at the line. In his first Olympic Games, Fisher won bronze in both the 10,000m and 5000m.
He's the only man in Paris to score medals in both events. He was fifth and ninth in the 10K and 5K in 2021 in Tokyo.
Kenya's Ronald Kwemoi won silver in 13:15.04, as the 28-year-old won his first Olympic medal after missing the fun in Tokyo.
