AIU Files Appeal With Court of Arbitration In Erriyon Knighton Case

The Athletics Integrity Unit filed an appeal of a "no fault" violation given to Erriyon Knighton by an independent arbitrator.

The Athletics Integrity Unit revealed Wednesday that it has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration of Sport in regards to the 'no fault' decision found by an independent arbitration in June relating to American sprinter Erriyon Knighton. 

The 20-year-old tested positive for a "metabolite of trenbolone" in March during an out-of-competition drug test, which prompted a suspension by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. 

Knighton, however, was later cleared by the independent arbitrator after a two-day hearing in June for "no fault" after Knighton was found to have consumed meat contaminated with the steroid. Knighton's clearance was issued just days before the U.S. Olympic Trials, allowing the Florida native to compete and qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.

When asked about his positive test during the Trials, Knighton responded: "In my heart I never did nothing wrong," he said. 

"My first meet back out, it's a relief that I made the team," he added. "and I'm always grateful to step on the track and represent Team USA." 

Knighton went on to the Paris Olympics, where he reached the final of the men's 200 meters and finished fourth overall, clocking a time of 19.99 seconds. 

The appeal, brought against Knighton and USADA, is now pending with the Court of Arbitration of Sport.
