The beauty, class and history of Rome. The talent, drama and excitement that come with each event of the short Wanda Diamond League season. It’s a recipe for an amazing night at the famed Olympic Stadium in Italy’s capital city.

The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea/Diamond League Rome 2024 will take place Aug. 30 as the second-to-last event qualifying event of the 2024 Diamond League schedule. It’s the 13th meet on the 15-event calendar, which will end with the season’s top performers heading Brussels, Belgium, for two days of battle.

The first seven events on the 2024 Diamond League schedule took place between April 20 and June 2, after which, a month-long hiatus allowed many countries to finalize their teams and plans for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Olympic Games took place in Paris from July 26 through Aug. 11, while the track and field events were held Aug. 1-11.

Diamond League action did resume briefly with events in Paris (July 7), Monaco (July 12) and London (July 20), before the world’s best athletes headed to the biggest stage in sports in the City of Light.

Many have been able to continue their Olympic momentum during recent Diamond League events in Lausanne (Aug. 22) and Silesia (Aug. 25), with others still trying to overcome any struggles they faced in Paris.

Ultimately, the clock is winding down on the 2024 Diamond League season and their chances to qualify for the season-ending event.

Since the meet has such huge implications, why not bring the athletes to another major city with Olympic history – Rome.

The Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, now in its 44th year, was renamed in 2013 in honor of Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea, who died just prior to that year’s edition.

The 2024 event will be held at Stadio Olimpico – also referred to as the Olimpico or the Olympic Stadium – and feature seven Diamond League events for men and seven for the women.

It was built in 1937, almost exclusively for track and field, but it received a makeover for the 1960 Olympics and has hosted many top-tier events since.

The renovations made it more versatile and able to welcome more than 70,000 fans for athletics, soccer, rugby and more.

What Has The 2024 Diamond League Season Looked Like?

The 2024 Diamond League season kicked off at the end of April with a pair of stops in China – Xiamen and Shanghai/Suzhou – and then visited Qatar on May 10, Morocco on May 19, Eugene, Oregon (Prefontaine Classic), on May 25, Oslo (Bislett Games) on May 30, Stockholm (BAUHAUS-galan) on June 2, Paris on July 7, Monaco (Herculis EBS Meeting) on July 12, London (London Athletics Meet) on July 20, Lausanne (Athletissima) on Aug. 22 and Silesia (Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial) on Aug. 25.

During the 15-event Diamond League schedule this year, athletes will cross the globe, with the season-ending championship event taking place in Brussels on Sept. 13-14.

The Diamond League Rome 2024 will include seven men’s disciplines and seven women’s disciplines, as athletes continue collecting points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.

The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.

Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines, though not every meet features all of them.

Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.

The disciplines featured in Rome in 2024 will be:

Men

  • 100 Meters
  • 400 Meters
  • 5,000 Meters
  • Discus
  • Triple Jump
  • Shot Put
  • High Jump

Women

  • 200 Meters
  • 1,500 Meters
  • 100-Meter Hurdles
  • 400-Meter Hurdles
  • 3,000-Meter Steeplechase
  • Pole Vault
  • Long Jump

As of Aug. 16, nine gold medalists from the 2024 Summer Olympics were scheduled to compete at the Diamond League event in Rome:

  • Ryan Crouser (United States, men’s shot put)
  • Roje Stona (Jamaica, men’s discus)
  • Letsile Tebogo (Botswana, men’s 200m)
  • Quincy Hall (United States, men’s 400m)
  • Hamish Kerr (New Zealand, men’s high jump)
  • Masai Russell (United States, women’s 100m hurdles)
  • Winfred Yavi (Bahrain, women’s 3,000m steeplechase)
  • Nina Kennedy (Australia, women’s pole vault)
  • Tara David-Woodhall (United States, women’s long jump)

Those are just a few of the motivated athletes ready to prove themselves at the Olympic Stadium, where one of the most anticipated events will be the meet-ending men’s 100, which will feature half the field from the final at the recent Olympics.

Though 2024 winner Noah Lyles of Team USA will not be present, fans will get to watch hometown favorite Marcell Jacobs, who won the event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and finished fifth in Paris. Also lined up in Rome will be silver medalist Kishane Thompson of Jamaica and Team USA’s Fred Kerley, who took the bronze.

Participating in the women’s 1,500 will be Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, the reigning Diamond League champion, who just picked up her third consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event.

Kipyegon won the 1,500 at the Golden Gala in 2023 with a world record time of 3:49.11, and she topped that marked a year later (in her only Diamond League appearance of the 2024 season) with a 3:49.04 performance. Both were at Diamond League meets.

Despite past success, however, she’ll need another solid performance in Rome if she hopes to advance to Brussels to defend her title. With two meets to go, she’s 11th on the points list, and only 10 advance.
