With just a few more Diamond League meetings left, there remains a slice of enticing matchups on the docket. Chief among them? Fred vs. Kishane.

Diamond League action continues this week as the meet returns to Rome at the site of the 2024 European Athletics Championships.

According to promotional materials, this year’s Golden Gala will feature 55 Olympic medalists.

Quincy Hall Returns in the 400m

Olympic gold medalist Quincy Hall will look to recreate the magic of his 43.40.

He’ll be challenged by Muzala Samukonga, Jereem Richards and Kirani James, who finished third, fourth and fifth in the Olympic final.

American Vernon Norwood will be in the mix after masterful relay performances in Paris.

Masai Russell Begins 100m Hurdle Defense

Plenty of the women’s high hurdlers from Paris will be running in Rome.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn will be absent, but Jamaican Ackera Nugent will be a formidable challenger after her win in Silesia.

American Masai Russell will always have her Olympic gold, but now she’ll be chasing late season Diamond League wins and an improvement to her personal best of 12.25.

She’ll need another big time by the end of the season to silence anyone claiming her gold was a fluke performance.

Battocletti Gets Her Shot at 1,500m

The surprise silver medalist in the 5K, the Italian Nadia Battocletti, will drop down to the 1,500m in Rome and challenge world record-holder Faith Kipyegon.

While Battocletti’s personal best of 4:03.34 is the slowest in the field -- three women have run at least ten seconds faster -- there's reason to think she won't be left behind here.

It’s not yet known whether Kipyegon will ask for the pacing to be set at meet record pace or world record pace.

As has been happening for most of this season, expect a trail of destruction behind her and modest challenges from Ethiopians Diribe Welteji and Birke Haylom.

Battocletti’s time of 14:31.64 in the 5K suggests she could approach sub-4, but she’ll be a wildcard in front of the home crowd and may struggle to overtake her compatriot Sinta Vissa, who owns a 3:58.11 best.

Another Shot For Fred Kerley vs Kishane Thompson

* Note: Thompson pulled out of the race in the day leading up to the event.

Fred Kerley won the 100m in Silesia in 9.87.

The Olympic bronze medalist was prepared for a showdown with silver medalist Kishane Thompson.

However, Thompson did not start the race.

With Noah Lyles stepping away from racing means there's growing importance in the Kerley-Thompson rivalry.

Pundits have suggested that Kerley’s confident run in the Olympic final in the lane next to Thompson led to Thompson’s tying up and faltering to second-place. A rematch here, especially with the men lined up next to each other, will be epic.

American Christian Coleman is on a redemption tour, as he didn’t make the U.S. team in the 100m and his brilliant opening leg in the 4x100 will be forgotten in the wake of the team’s disqualification.

Letsile Tebogo might be overraced at this point, but his presence in the field will keep things interesting.

An Enticing 5K Even Without Jakob Ingebrigtsen

Jakob Ingebrigtsen arranging a 5,000m world record attempt the same week as his 3K world record would be the type of scenario that track fans dream about.

Without him, though, the Olympic silver medalist, Kenya’s Ronald Kwemoi,g will carry the mantle. Grant Fisher, who was initially entered, has called his season to end.

The field contains a thick slice of the 5K final, with five Ethiopians and Morgan McDonald.

Some of the men will be looking to rebound after getting thrashed behind Ingebrigtsen's world record 3K on Sunday.

Berihu Aregawi, who finished in under 7:22 for the second fastest mark of all time, is probably the favorite in this field.
