Molly Haywood Nabs Gold, Americans Secure Medals On Day 3 Of World U20s
Molly Haywood secured the first gold medal for the U.S. on the third day of action at the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru.
Molly Haywood became the first under-20 athlete from the United States to win gold on Thursday at the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, scoring the top mark in the women's pole vault with a result of 4.47 meters.
That performance was a new personal best for Haywood, a 19-year-old freshman for Baylor University who finished fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
Haywood's previous best mark came on her home track in April when she authored a leap of 4.46 meters at the Michael Johnson Invitational. On Thursday, the Texan entered at 4.15m, needed two bars to clear 4.25m and then pushed through 4.35m clean before needing three tries at 4.47m.
