Diamond League Zurich (Weltklasse Zurich) 2024 Schedule: What To Know

With nearly a century of history and tradition, there may not be a better event to help wind down the 2024 Wanda Diamond League season than Weltklasse Zurich.

The event is the 14th meet on the 15-competition Diamond League calendar and the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the upcoming season-ending event in Brussels, Belgium.

Weltklasse Zurich/Diamond League Zurich 2024 will take place at the famed Letzigrund Stadium, the only home the competition has ever known. The original stadium was constructed in 1925, and the inaugural edition of Weltklasse Zurich took place in 1928.

This year’s meet will take place Sept. 4-5, though only one discipline will be held on the opening day of competition in Zurich.

Since spots in the year’s final event are entirely performance-based, the stop in Switzerland likely will include more pressure and more drama than any other event on the 2024 calendar.

Athletes have crossed the globe multiple times since the season kicked off in April looking to accumulate enough success and points to give them a chance to become one of the Diamond League champions crowned in Brussels.

The first step is to get there, and some of those dreams will come true in Zurich. Others may see their dreams slip away.

There also will be a special 100-meter showdown between two great champions stepping out of their comfort zones, as neither competes regularly in the 100. More on that later.

2024 Diamond League Season Winds Down

The first two stops of the 2024 Diamond League season were held in China – Xiamen (April 20) and Shanghai/Suzhou (April 27). The circuit then visited Qatar (May 10), Morocco (May 19), Eugene, Oregon (May 25), Oslo, Norway (May 30), Stockholm (June 2), Paris (July 7), Monaco (July 12), London (July 20), Lausanne (Aug. 22), Silesia (Aug. 25) and Rome (Aug. 30).

The Diamond League Zurich/Weltklasse Zurich 2024 will include seven men’s disciplines and seven women’s disciplines, as athletes continue collecting points toward the year’s final event in Belgium.

The invitation-only Diamond League brings together the most elite track & field athletes to showcase their skills, earn prize money, collect points toward the season-ending championship event and ultimately elevate the status of athletics across the globe.

Traditionally, Diamond League competition includes a slate of 16 disciplines, though not every meet features all of them.

Points accumulated during the first 14 events of the season determine the athletes who advance to the final event, where they compete for more prize money and Diamond League titles.

When Is The Diamond League Zurich (Weltklasse Zurich) 2024?

The Diamond League Zurich/Weltklasse Zurich 2024 will take place Sept. 4-5 in Zurich. It’s more than just a one-day track and field meet – it’s an extravaganza.

The sellout event will kick off Sept. 4 with the women’s pole vault, which will take place at the Zurich Main Station (train station).

The agenda for Sept. 5 includes a festival of hurdles, as all four hurdling events will be featured in the 2024 meet.

The disciplines worth Diamond League points won’t be the only action in town, as the schedule for Sept. 5 at Letzigrund Stadium includes events for youth, locals, wheelchair athletes and more.

Letzigrund, the largest event venue in Switzerland, is a regular destination for top-tier track and field events, but the stadium also is home to multiple teams and clubs – FC Zurich (soccer), Grasshopper Club Zurich (soccer) and LC Zurich (athletics).

Generally, Letzigrund has room for up to 30,000 visitors for sporting events and more than 50,000 for concerts.

The original stadium was used from 1925-2006. During that time, there were multiple renovations, including the addition of lights in 1973. The latest iteration of Letzigrund opened in 2007.

The list of athletes looking to add to their own legacies, while also solidifying their places in the meet and venue histories, is long and reads like a who’s who of track and field, especially with all the attention they’ve gotten since the recent Summer Olympics in Paris.

Among the festivities will be Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, who won the pole vault gold medal in Paris with a world-record effort. Though the men’s pole vault won’t count for Diamond League points, he be in Zurich competing, and he’ll get to go against his idol, French star Renaud Lavillenie, the 2012 Olympic champion.

Duplantis also will participate in a special event that will see him showcase his speed in a 100-meter dash against Norway’s Karsten Warholm, an Olympic and world champion in the 400-meter hurdles. Neither competes in the event on a regular basis, but they have in the past.
