New York City Marathon 2024 Entry List

Since its inception in the early 1970s, the New York City Marathon has set the bar for what a big-city race should be, and the 2024 edition of the prestigious event brought in approximately 165,000 applications for 50,000 spots.

Those who are fortunate enough to gain entry into the race will enjoy a scenic and historic 26.2-mile journey through the five boroughs of New York City on Nov. 3.

The action will get underway at 8 a.m. Eastern, with runners of all ages, abilities and skill levels from all over the globe lacing up.

Among the entrants for the 2024 New York City Marathon will be reigning men’s champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, who won the 2023 race in a course-record 2:04.58 and will be back to defend his title a few months after winning the marathon at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in an Olympic-record 2:06.26.

History-making Hellen Obiri of Kenya also will be back to defend her title at the New York City Marathon. She won the 2023 race in 2:27.23, while becoming the first woman in more than three decades to win both the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon in the same year.

Though Obiri was able to return to Boston in April and win her second consecutive Boston Marathon, she fell short at the Olympics, settling for the bronze medal.

Other elite men scheduled to be in New York are Belgium’s Bashir Abdi, Kenyans Geoffrey Kamworor, Albert Korir and Evans Chebet, and Americans Conner Mantz and Clayton Young.

On the women’s side with Obiri will be Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir, Sharon Lokedi, Edna Kiplagat and Vivian Cheruiyot, Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba and a trio of Americans – Des Linden, Aliphine Tuliamuk and Jenny Simpson.

About The New York City Marathon

This year’s event will be the 53rd edition of the New York City Marathon, which was held for the first time in 1970 with 127 entrants and has grown to become the world’s largest marathon.

Since the inaugural race, held entirely in Central Park, the New York City Marathon has been organized by New York Road Runners.

Nearly 165,000 runners applied to take part in the race, which is the second-most in history, behind the 2020 application period for the historic 50th running of the marathon in 2021.

And, along with being the largest marathon in the world and one of the most anticipated days in sports each year, the New York City Marathon is a huge fundraiser for charity.

Since the introduction of the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program in 2006, more than $520 million has been raised for over 1,000 non-profit organizations.

The New York City Marathon is held during the first week of November each year and gives competitors an opportunity to see all five of New York City’s boroughs, starting on Staten Island and ended where it all began more than 50 years ago – Central Park in Manhattan.

The event includes elite runners chasing world records, A-list celebrities, wheelchair racers and more recreational competitors, all of whom will set out in waves from the starting line in Fort Wadsworth.

To be eligible for prize money the NYC Marathon, competitors must finish the race in 3 hours, 10 minutes or better. Sweep buses will follow the race, and runners must maintain a pace of at least 16 minutes per mile. The official end-of-race time is 10 p.m. EDT.
