“We can’t wait to see the best track athletes in the world add to the rich history of outstanding competition in Franklin Field when Grand Slam Track comes to Philadelphia,” said Steve Dolan, director of track and field/cross country at the University of Pennsylvania and Frank Dolson director of Penn Relays. “We look forward to working with Michael Johnson and his team to create a first-class environment for the athletes and an exceptional experience for the fans.”
Franklin Field marks the largest venue selected so far by Grand Slam Track, seating over 52,000 spectators. Kingston's National Stadium can hold 35,000, while Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar only holds about 5,000 fans. Most notably, Franklin Field is home to the Penn Relays Carnival, which has been hosted there since the stadium's opening in 1895.
“Philly has a reputation for bringing intensity to every event, and that’s exactly what we’re looking for with Grand Slam Track,” said Michael Johnson, Grand Slam Track founder and Commissioner. “There’s a unique energy in this city, and we’re excited to see how the athletes respond to that. Philadelphia’s sports culture is something else, and it’s going to elevate the competition.”
Grand Slam Track said in release that the venue and date for the Los Angeles Slam will be announced tomorrow.
