Graham Blanks (Harvard)
When Blanks steps up to the line this weekend in Boston, it'll have been exactly two weeks since he defended his national title in cross country. It's also going to be just over a year since he broke the collegiate record at this same meet as a junior. The Harvard legend has always been a tactically sound racer, and we're likely to see more of that throughout all 25 laps as he eyes the world standard of 13:01 for 5000m, which is just two seconds quicker than what he ran a year ago. Blanks, who ran in the Olympic final just a few months ago, is due for something fast this weekend.
Doris Lemngole (Alabama)
Yes, the 5000m field is stuffed with world-class talent, but are any of the challengers in a position to topple Lemngole? Well, her two biggest threats at the collegiate level are a pair of familiar faces in former teammate Hilda Olemomoi (Florida) and New Mexico's Pamela Kosgei. She took down both women at the NCAA Championships in Wisconsin, pulling away down the homestretch. Granted, the indoor oval is a different beast compared to a cross country course, but the two-time national champion has handled the task pretty well. Her best time since heading to Tuscaloosa is a blistering 15:04.71, which makes Lemngole the second-fastest collegian in history, trailing just Parker Valby. The sophomore is more than capable of dipping under 15:00, but is Valby's record of 14:52.79 in jeopardy?
Parker Wolfe (North Carolina)
The last year has been a fast one for Wolfe, highlighted by his first national title and a third-place finish in the 5000m at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Colorado native kept the good times rollin' this fall, notching a big win at the Nuttycombe Invitational, and a seventh-place finish at NCAA's, his ninth All-American honor. A change of scenery will more than likely play in Wolfe's favor, simply because of his turnover and his proven ability to successfully navigate fast fields by putting himself in prime position when the bell rings. Though Wolfe won't be battling Blanks in the 5k, he'll still put on a show in the 3k, an event which he ranks No. 3 in collegiate history. He ran 7:37.41 this past February and is one of only two men to break 7:40 since the 2022 season.
Hilda Olemomoi (Florida) & Pamela Kosgei (New Mexico)
On their own, they're two of the best runners in the NCAA, but when they're together, they combine for the biggest threat to Lemngole's reign over the collegiate landscape. Olemomoi, who is the third-fastest collegian in history, ran 15:06.42 in April and did not run slower than 15:20 in any of her 5000m races last season. Kosgei on the other hand is making her collegiate track debut and doesn't have as many results to go off of, but her lone unofficial race as a Lobo was a 9:28.88 in the 3000m steeplechase over the summer at the PDX Track Festival, which would make her the 13th fastest collegian of all-time. Kosgei has beaten Olemomoi head-to-head twice this fall, but the Gator is never far behind. If it's not Emily Venters (Nike) pushing Lemngole up front, expect it to be one of these two.
