- 5 Breakout Athletes To Watch In The 2025 Track And Field Season
With 339 NCAA member schools sponsoring Division I track and field for women, and 287 schools featuring men’s programs, there are more than 24,000 Division I track and field athletes in the country.
Because of the large number of eligible athletes, the road to a national championship is a little bit longer during the outdoor track and field season.
The season’s top performers first must compete in one of two first-round events, one in the east and one in the west. In 2025, the East First Round will take place in Jacksonville, Florida, from May 28-31, while the West First Round will be held in College Station, Texas, during the same time frame.
In the individual events (excluding the heptathlon and decathlon), 48 athletes are invited to the first-round meets. In the relays, it’s 24 teams.
From each first-round event, the top 12 finishers from the individual disciplines and the top 12 teams from each relay advance to the season-ending national event.

About Hayward Field
Hayward Field, which was built in 1919, is no stranger to top-tier track and field events, including the Diamond League and the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The venue is named after Bill Hayward, who ran the University of Oregon track and field program from 1904 to 1947. Though it originally was intended for Ducks football, many additions and renovations over the century have helped it become a premier destination.
In September 2023, the venue became the first facility outside of Zurich or Brussels to host the two-day season-ending Wanda Diamond League Final, where the year’s 32 overall champions were crowned.
