One of the best to ever do it in distance running is returning to the streets of London.

2024 runner-up Kenenisa Bekele will compete once again in the TCS London Marathon and has been added to the 2025 men's elite field, announced on Monday by event organizers.

The 42-year-old Bekele, who's had a prolific careeer on the track and the roads, will race the same event where he set the 2:04:15 men's masters marathon world record last year.

He joins a star-studded men's field that includes Paris Olympic champion Tamirat Tola, reigning London champion Alexander Mutiso, world half marathon record holder Jacob Kiplimo and 11-time World Marathon major champion Eliud Kipchoge.

Looking at Bekele's over 20-year career, it's been full of historic moments. He's garnered 17 world championship titles on the track and in cross country, and he owns two World Marathon Major wins, both from the Berlin Marathon. 

For a 16-year period, Bekele held the world records on the track in both the 5,000m and 10,000m.

Now that Bekele will race the 2025 London Marathon, it renews a rivalry between two of the greatest distance runners ever with a long-running history of competition. Kipchoge, the only man to ever run under two hours at the marathon distance, and Bekele have been racing against each other since 2003 when they raced the 5,000m at the World Outdoor Championships. 

Bekele's record against Kipchoge on the track? He went 13-for-16 in track races, however Kipchoge has beaten Bekele in every marathon the two have raced together, except for the Paris Olympic marathon.

"Of course, it will be special to once again run against Eliud, we have enjoyed some fantastic moments racing one another over the past 22 years," Bekele said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to that continuing at the TCS London Marathon."
