NCAA Round-Up: Top Track And Field Teams In The Nation 2025

Now that we're nearing the end of February, it's time to start looking ahead to the postseason. At the sport's highest collegiate level, there are dozens of storylines to follow over the next few weeks, including those surrounding the upcoming national championships.

Heading into the home stretch, here's how the top of the leaderboard looks as the season begins to wind down.

BYU Leads The Way On The Women's Side

Heading into the final slate of competition before conference championship weekend, several programs have cemented themselves as true contenders in Virginia Beach next month.

On paper, one team stands out above the rest, none other than the BYU Cougars with the best distance squad in the nation right now. After winning a national title on the grass in November, Diljeet Taylor's group has been firing on all cylinders, breaking national records, and re-writing the collegiate record books.

  • Meghan Hunter, 800m (2:00.21) - No. 6 All-Time
  • Riley Chamberlain, Mile (4:26.19) - No. 9 All-Time
  • Lexy Halladay-Lowry, 5000m (14:57.63) - No. 4 All-Time
  • Carmen Alder, Hunter, Tessa Buswell, Chamberlain, DMR (10:37.58) - NCAA All-Conditions Record

Despite BYU's unstoppable distance team, their biggest challenger at NCAAs will be the championship meet's two-day schedule, which makes it rather tricky for distance athletes to take on a heavy workload.

However, if any coach and program can navigate that to perfection, it's the one in Provo, UT.

In addition to BYU, both Texas Tech and Arkansas have well-rounded squads that can chip away at a lead and take advantage of their numbers.

The Red Raiders will rely heavily on sprint star Success Umukoro and hurdler Naomi Krebs but will have enough qualifiers where they could potentially steal points here and there.

The Arkansas Razorbacks are in a similar position, with hypothetical scorers in the sprints, jumps, and mid-distance events, as well as the top 4x400m relay in the nation.

Aside from the top three contenders, Oregon, Stanford, and Illinois have put together teams with podium and championship aspirations of their own.

USC Has The Numbers And Firepower To Win Big

For years, the majority of national champions have been teams that can seemingly score and rack up points at any given time. For Quincy Watts and his Southern California staff, that's exactly what they're set up for in Los Angeles.

As it stands, the Trojans could have as many as six different athletes and a relay contribute to their point total at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Whether it's Chrstyn John in the 60m and long jump, Johnny Brackins in the 60mH, or their 200m/400m squad, they can get points in a variety of ways.

There's no telling how many points this team can put up, but it might take a perfect day to keep USC from winning what would be their first indoor title since 1972.

The battle for a spot on the podium is just as exciting, with Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M all within nine points of one another.

Arkansas may have the best shot of any to keep pace with USC, considering they have potential point scorers in a lot of events, from the 5000m to the heptathlon. This is also a program that can score more than 13 points in the distance and mid-distance events, especially if they put together a lethal DMR.

North Carolina has the star power but would need to channel some 2021 Oregon magic to get the job done. With Ethan Strand and Parker Wolfe leading the way, there's no telling what they can do.

Texas Tech and Texas A&M also have the firepower to end the season on the podium, but will have to beat some tough teams to do so.
