Shelby Houlihan's signature kick came in handy yet again.

At the 2025 World Indoor Championship, Houlihan used a tactful surge over the closing lap to take silver in the women's 3,000m final, clocking 8:38.26.

Whittni Morgan finished in fourth and secured a 2-4 finish for Team USA.

Houlihan positioned herself in fourth for a majority of the race. She sat on the right shoulder of fellow American Morgan through the opening 2,500 meters of the race. Out front, Nozomi Tanaka (JPN) led the field.

But with 500 meters remaining, Freweyni Hailu (ETH) made her move toward the front and the field scrambled for position. Houlihan found herself in third on the rail at the bell lap, 10 meters back from Hailu and Jessica Hull (AUS) in second.

Over the last 100 meters, Houlihan made up the gap on Hull and was able to out-lean the Australian at the line. They were separated by just two-hundredths of a second. Houlihan crossed in 8:38.26 ahead of Hull's 8:38.28. Hailu ran away with the win in 8:37.21.

Behind them, Morgan secured her run in fourth at 8:39.18.

This weekend's meet was Houlihan's first World Championship since the 2019 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Doha. At those games, Houlihan ran a 3:54.99 1,500m for fourth. That time is the American Record.

Houlihan made her return to the sport in January after serving a four-year sanction ban. She received her ban in 2021 after testing positive for nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. She maintained her innocence over that span and made her return to the sport in January 2025 at age 31. She turned 32 in early February.

She qualified for the USATF Indoor Championships with her 8:31.56 3,000m at the Razorback Invitational on Feb. 1. Houlihan then ran a 4:20.30 mile at the BU Scarlet and White Invite on February 8 before qualifying for the World Indoor Championships with a second-place finish in the 3,000m at the USATF Indoor Championships.
