At the BU Terrier DMR Challenge, Owen Powell ran an outrageous 3:56.66, to set a NEW High School National Record.

Owen Powell has officially set the high school national record in the indoor mile, running 3:56.66 at the BU Terrier DMR Challenge on Friday night.

Just a week after running the second fastest all-conditions mile in high school history, Powell came back to the mile in an attempt to run something fast at Boston University. By all accounts, he delivered.

In the top heat, the high school senior chased the lead pack. He split a 1:58.05 through the opening 809m. He then posted four consecutive sub-30-second laps to bring it home under 3:57, in eighth overall.

Powell shattered the previous HS record of 3:57.66, set by Hobbs Kessler in 2021. 

Amazingly, Powell wasn't the only high school under the 4-minute mark, in fact he wasn't the only boy under the previous record.

Josiah Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen completed their indoor miles in 3:57.47 and 3:59.61, respectively. Tostenson joined Powell under Kessler's previous HS Record.

Powell is committed to the University of Washington, where he will be in good company with some of the nation's best mid-distance starts.

The 2025 BU Terrier DMR Challenge/Last Chance is slated to begin at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 21. Both the men's and women's events will be raced on Friday.
