Who Will Emerge As The Stars Of The Sprints?
In a sprint-heavy conference, it's no surprise that the SEC Indoor Championships serves as a launching point for NCAA championship favorites to emerge at the shorter distances.
Last year, it was South Carolina freshman JaMeesia Ford who made a statement at SECs that later translated to an NCAA championship. Ford won the SEC Indoors women's 200m in a facility record 22.36 in Fayetteville and then went on to win the first collegiate title of her young career in Boston at the NCAA Indoor Championships, clocking 22.34 for 200m.
Will it be Ford that stands out as a star again on the women's side in the sprints? It is certainly possible, as she will be looking to defend her title from SEC Indoors last year. But she won't be the only woman to watch out for.
A pair of LSU Tigers -- Brianna Lyston and Tima Godbless -- have already made huge statements this season. Godbless currently leads the collegiate ranks in the 60m this season with her 7.08 effort from the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 14, and Lyston ranks third in the NCAA with her 7.13 run from the same meet. Both will contest the 60m along with the 200m with sights on SEC titles, points and paths to NCAA titles.
Shifting to the men's side, Auburn's Kayinsola Ajayi will hope to win the men's 60m yet again after taking first in 2024 in 6.60. He's already blazed to a 6.51 60m time this indoor season, which is tied for the second-fastest collegiate mark in 2025.
Ajayi's fellow Auburn teammate Makanakaishe Charamba, however, could be the guy with the most potential to continue on his rise through the ranks at SECs. At the Tiger Paw Invitational on Feb. 14, Charamba ran 20.16 for 200m, which sits as the eighth-fastest indoor performance in world history and a new Zimbabwean national record. He'll be competing at the one-lap distance again at the SEC Indoor Championships this weekend, perhaps hoping to win and improve upon that historic mark.
How Many Points Can Arkansas' Women's 400m Squad Score?
Arkansas has earned the nickname "400m U" for a reason.
In 2024, the women's 400m squad went one through four at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with the now-PUMA athlete Nickisha Pryce setting a new collegiate record in that event. They also set an insane 3:21.92 collegiate 4x400m record last outdoor season, and on the indoor oval, the Razorbacks earned first, second and third in the women's 400m at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Though Pryce, along with standouts Amber Anning and Rosey Effiong, have moved on to the pro ranks, Arkansas still has by far one of the best 400m groups in the country thanks to some newcomers.
Now, the question may be just how many points can the squad score this weekend in College Station. They're led by Penn grad transfer Isabella Whittaker, who went 50.87 earlier this season at the Tyson Invitational for one of the fastest marks in the NCAA in 2025. Teammates Sanaria Butler and Joanne Reid have clocked season bests of 51.95 and 52.01, which rank seventh and eighth collegiately this season.
But among those that could break that trio up is Paris Olympian Aaliyah Butler, who leads the collegiate ranks this season in the quarter mile at 50.85.
How Will Distance Points Play A Factor In Team Scores?
Sure, it's the sprints and the field events that seem to dominate the conversation around the SEC Championships. But distance competitions could play a huge role in determining which programs get to hoist the team trophies on Saturday evening.
Expect to see some of the NCAA's top distance talents battle it out in the 3k and 5k.
On the women's side, Doris Lemngole of Alabama and Hilda Olemomoi will duke it out for valuable points in the 3k. Lemngole, the 2024 NCAA cross country champion, and Olemomoi, the third-place finisher at those NCAA Cross Country Championships, last faced off on the indoor oval in December at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, with Lemngole setting the collegiate indoor 5k record at 14:52.57 and Olemomoi finishing in a very narrow second in 14:52.84.
Meanwhile, big performances from Arkansas' Paityn Noe in the 3k and 5k could be big for the Razorbacks as they look to win an insane 13th-straight team title. Noe, who ranks 15th in the NCAA this indoor season in the 3k and 13th in the 5k, enters as one of the top seeds in both events, and a significant point score from that double could be the icing on the cake for Arkansas' pursuit of another SEC championship.
Shifting to the men's distance fields, expect for some duels between Arkansas' and Alabama's deep squads. While Arkansas may have the edge at the mile distance with school record holder Reuben Reina and sub-4:00 milers Davis Helmerich and Ben Shearer among the top entrants, Alabama has a strong contingent looking for points in the 5k with Victor Kiprop and Dennis Kipruto.
The 3k, though, could be where the Razorbacks rack up the points. With All-Americans Yaseen Abdalla and Patrick Kiprop leading the way, along with Reina and Brian Masai, expect Arkansas to pack up and aim for a huge score.
Can Texas A&M Win Its First-Ever SEC Indoor Title -- And At Home?
The Aggies have won national titles both indoors and outdoors, but they've never been able to bring home a conference crown at the SEC Indoor Championships.
Could 2025 be the year to do it, competing on their home oval? You could certainly build a case for why Texas A&M, especially on the men's side, could contend for the conference title this weekend.
In 2024, the Aggies finished third on the men's side behind Arkansas and Florida at the SEC Indoor Championships and would later go on to finish sixth overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships. However, the scores were even closer come outdoors, with Texas A&M taking third to Arkansas and Alabama at SEC Outdoors, finishing just 6.5 points behind the Razorbacks and half a point away from the Tide. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Aggies improved upon their indoor finish, taking fifth and even earning a win in the men's 4x400m to close out the competition.
What makes this year look promising for the Texas A&M men this year is the amount of talent they've brought back. Many members of that team returned to College Station in 2025, including big names like current NCAA 400m No. 3 Auhmad Robinson and the sixth-best 60m hurdler so far this NCAA season in Ja'Qualon Scott. Plus, the Aggie men lead the NCAA this indoor season in the 4x400m.
But winning an SEC title won't be easy. On the men's side, Arkansas has won each of the past five years, and on the women's side, the Razorbacks have 12-straight SEC Indoor team championships.
And there's certainly nothing that indicates that the Razorbacks couldn't get it done this year. According to the FloTrack Indoor Collegiate Team Power Index, the Arkansas women rank as third, and the men sit second. Texas A&M currently sits at fifth in the men's rankings.
